A Concise Introduction and More

As I have said in other reviews, I have decided to get back into amateur radio recently. When I was on the air years ago I always wanted to try the digital modes on HF but just never got around to it. Since that was a while ago, I started doing research on PSK31, RTTY, etc. on the internet. While there is a wealth of information out there, it can be a little confusing to get a handle on which programs to use, how everything interacts with the sound card, what a QSO would look like, etc. Further, many websites key in on minutae that can bewilder someone who has never used a particular mode (i.e. tuning, the different interfaces, etc.).

On a whim I picked this book up and am glad that I did.

This book outlines the popular HF digital modes, their advantages, and how they work without getting overly in depth. More importantly, for each mode a software package is used from setup, to receiving, to transmitting. This to me is what is lacking on most digital HF websites. If you don't belong to a club or have an elmer to guide you, this book will get you where you want to go. Realistically if you pick a digital mode, have a good rig, a decent antenna, a computer, and a soundcard interface you can read this book and be on the air in an hour or so.

The only drawback is that this book accomplishes its mission too well. Outside of the chapters on the digital modes and the soundcard interface information it is kind of 'fluff'. The contesting stuff is interesting but it seems watered down to me. I really wished that the authors would have provided more information such as:

* HF digital HAM shack examples - What do digital HF contesters use for their rig setups?

* Using multiple software packages effectively - Logging, CAT control type interfaces, HF digital mode software, and DX Cluster for example. How do you "bring it all together" so to speak.

It just seems like with a tad bit more effort this book could have gone beyond and become an outstanding reference. But for the $$$ I feel this was a good buy.

Much cheaper than from ARRL directly. Good overall.

It's not a very thick book, so fast read and limited in content.
Nothing you will not find on internet, but at times it's nice to have it all in one place.
Also that's "a beginner's guide" as the title says, so the content is about as expected.
Now if I could just get a cheap kit... :-) Computers and HF (as well as VHF/UHF frequencies) are made to work together.

Definitely not for the beginner - but not for the expert either

Lots of theory and block diagrams to help you understand what components go into a digital station. It has a great listing of websites for PSK31 and RTTY info. But the good news ends there. It fails to help the novice bridge the gap between radio to PC to software - usually ARRL books are more hands-on and this one comes up way short in that regard.

And he writes too!

Carman is best known for his career in music. In recent years, he's branched out into acting and now he's writing. This is his second novel (the novelization for "The Champion" was his first), and it's a good run.
The premise is good. An Ultimate Fighting Championship type fighter escapes into the witness protection program and ends up losing his cover. The Russian mafia comes after him and he has to use his skills to protect himself and the woman he's growing to love.
The characters here are good, and it's obvious that Carman's a talented guy. The middle lags just a bit, but it ends well. It's an action-packed story for the most part though. All in all, this is a satisfying read, and I think Carman succeeded in what he set out to do. He may not win over any new fans with this one, but he's going to keep his old ones happy.

Carman's book is a must read for all members of the fan family. This story will grip you from the first page.
I especially loved the moment when Jack and Sarah are reunited. I was spellbound. Here's hoping that Carman will captivate us with another novel. He is as gifted as a writer as he is with music.

Delighted The Edge Chronicles saga finally continues!

I am a HUGE fan of The Edge Chronicles - it could go on forever and I still would never get enough of it! I will happily buy and read every single Edge series book you two guys write for this series! I cannot hide my enthusiasm & excitement that there are more in the future! I live in the US, but went to a great many pains to switch over to Amazon.UK so I could read this book now, instead a hundred months from now when it is released to the US market - hey, a fans got to do what a fans got to do to make sure they are truly worthy of the title! :)

This is the most ingenious, clever and creative series I have ever been fortunate enough to read! I sincerely hope this will someday be made into a series of movies & that Chris Riddell illustrates it (real actors won't be as magical I'm afraid) - because one just won't be enough - however I hope it's essence is not twisted & changed the way most books are when producers & directors feel they can do a better job than the original authors & illustrators who created the series universe in the first place. |***Stewart & Riddell: Stand strong on this! Your fans are counting on you!***|

Sort of disappointed that we didn't get to find out about Nate Quarter & Ifflix Hentadile's adventurous journey descending over The Edge, and what they found there. Does the cliff face ever end, an if so, what is at the bottom? Our earth perhaps? Are we all fourthlings, descendents of The Edge-land ancestry? What did they find? And how does Nate have a sibling(s)? I thought he was an only child. where is Quint Verginix's knight academic picture pendant now? Does Eudoxia still have it? Is she & it safe still living on the Sanctaphrax Rock? Has Nate ever returned to her? These burning questions - and many more, need to be answered!

I hope the next book is released soon! I'll waiting ...

Unique Advice

I was intrigued as to what this book contained. I always thought Steve looked ripped whenever I saw his picture in another book or elsewhere. I was not disappointed when I finished reading it. However, for the most part, this book is for very advanced Bodybuilders who wish to fix muscular and/or symmetrical imbalances before a contest. Steve's advice did make me more aware that just doing Barbell Flat Bench Presses for years in a row could create the opposite of what I want.

I enjoyed reading it and recommend it

This is an exceptional book. I wouldn't have learnt about it, but for the fact that I ended up visiting this firm's office recently. That led me to it's website and then this book. It contains a lot of wisdom for money managers aspiring to manage other people's money. Most of the ideas are elementary common sense, but they have been articulated very well, and sometimes hilariously well. I enjoyed reading it and recommend it.

Common sense advice that just works

I'll keep it simple. Great book with lots of common sense points and advice. The problem is that we and the investment fund industry find it easy to complicate things for many different reasons: to justify high fees, to try to be original in its investment approach and be commercially attractive, because if it's so obvious it can't work and so on. The fact is, if one has discipline, common sense and true commitment to long-term, investing is truly simple.

I really enjoyed this particular book

I had the opportunity to actually read this before it was released, oddly enough amazon sent it to me (in the 3 book combo thing) before its release date too, haha. So I got it twice before the release date, but anyway, I really enjoyed this particular book. Had tears streaming at the end too. Ravenpaw has been a cat close to many a fan's heart from the the beginning and this was quite the touching finale. I'm sure many, like me, wondered what would become of Ravenpaw after the clans left, so this is definitely a fun read for those who have been with the series from the beginning!

I don't want to spoil anything of course, but definitely amongst my favorites of the novellas.

This book was AWESOM. I really enjoyed it. It was so sad when Ravenpaw died I cried, and I usually don't cry. He is going to Starclan after Barely dies, and this was a story of love. They are not gay, they just love each other as two brothers would. This has been one of my favorite books so far, and I am reading it again. Good job Erin Hunter!! :D
