Wolves of Black Pine (The Wolfkin Saga) (Volume 1), by SJ Himes

An ancient civilization long hidden from humanity is on the brink of chaos and war. Peaceful for thousands of years, the wolfkin clans are mysteriously losing packmates, kidnapped and killed by unknown foes. The nightmare begins with an ambush by humans at a gathering of their kind, and lives are lost. Among them is Luca, youngest grandson of the two most powerful wolves in the Northern Clans. Thought long dead and gone, he is forced into a half-life, hidden in the far northern wilds of Canada and cut off from his kind. Those who raised him have no idea the creature they harbor in their midst, and name him Ghost. He begins to lose himself over the long years, and though he barely recalls his true name, the one wolf he never forgets is Kane. Kane, Heir to the wolfkin clan Black Pine, is charged with hunting down the traitors who betrayed their kind to the humans. Years fly by, and more wolves are dying. He refuses to give up, and he vows to never again fail another of their kind, as he failed young Luca years before. His heart tells him Luca lives, but his mind tells him that it's foolish hope, his guilt eating him alive. Fate and magic change the course of their lives, and the two wolves long separated by the years find their paths intertwining. Though the gift of their reunion doesn't come without price. Faced by the consequences of their growing love, and the goddess-forged bond between them, Kane and Ghost are besieged on all sides. Enemies are coming for their blood, and without the steadfast loyalty and love of family and friends, they may not be safe from the very people they fight to protect.

Wolfkin are real, right???
By kirstyv
S J Himes’ debut novel is one of a series of M/M Paranormal romances that I have read recently which feature Shapeshifters. All of these stories have been good, some even great but for me Wolves of Black Pine is the one standing next to the others with a blinking neon sign above it, saying “I am awesome!”
From this sub-genre, I have grown to expect a heat level bordering on sizzling to scorching. Though there are some intense and extremely erotic scenes between S J Himes’ characters, she uses sex sparingly so that there is always a significant meaning behind the act.
From the beginning of the novel, when we enter the magical history lesson which Gray Shadow is delivering to the cubs, S J Himes works hard to form a deep connection between the Wolfkin and her reader, bringing us into their world and them into ours. The story spans fifteen years and we witness tragedy, loss, betrayal, love and healing and we are a part of the emotional journey of these wolves.
Perhaps the main reason I found myself repeatedly tapping my Kindle at the story’s end, hoping for just a little more, is S J Himes’ perfect characterisation. She creates these individuals in such a way that we understand their motives; we can empathize with their changing emotions and we fear for their safety.
Ghost is the character who we see developing the most; from the lost cub to a talented and huge-hearted Shaman. Yet though Ghost is the wolf I loved the most, every character, even the secondary ones, have an impact on the story and our reaction to it.
Wolves of Black Pine is one of those novels which captured me completely and when I put the book down I was thinking about Ghost, Kane, Andromeda, Gabe and the others – and the next part of their story. Although December seems a long time to wait at least I know I will have something to look forward to in the cold winter! I cannot recommend this book enough . . . so go and buy it now!
I received this as a complimentary copy, in exchange for an honest review.

Wolves of Black Pine
By Daniel Bowen
Wolves of Black Pine. Gosh, where do I start. This is a story about wolf shifters, a story that goes deep into detail, plot, and execution. There's all the regular stuff going on with power struggles, scientists, and evil wolves as well as strong family units. The main wolf that the story sinks into is Luca, later known as Ghost. He's like this throwback to his ancestors. He does things instinctively. He had a rough start but keeps at it with his big heart and fierce determination. His situation grabbed my interest and it never let go.

I can't remember when I read a book this long. Over 400 pages in a m/m shifter book and it's offered with Kindle Unlimited? Wow. Better yet it had all the elements I love in a paranormal shifter book. Strong male leads. Willing to fight for what is morally right yet stand down when needed. It was wonderful watching Ghost come into his own. Even better that his grandfather's words came true and Kane was there for him. In more ways than one.

I don't have any serious nit picks. Maybe that once Cat and her husband were in the compound they were just sort of forgotten. I was expecting a bit more interaction with them. I did expect them to help with recovering the wolves. I also expected River to step up and talk about Ghost's grandfather and mention a few words or offer some basic training or something. It's getting harder to believe that Ghost can be in every situation and still come out ahead with using new and untapped powers. Even his mate should step up and assist if no one else will. Show what he does when dealing with his Voice, how he controls it - But no, none of that is happening. It's just off the cuff reaction and trusting in his Goddess which is fine for awhile. But as time goes on suspending my belief won't cut it.

I am hoping the continuation will be out later this year because even though things were tied up, there's still enough suspense. Not quite a cliff hanger but close. This one is going on my watch list to wait for the next segment. - Dan's Wife

EPIC START TO A SERIES!
By Bike Book Reviews
This book is just stunning, the way it morphs from when Luca is young and the unthinkable happens, to years later when he is Ghost and living a life far removed from his early years is seamless, which is very hard to do.

We first meet young Luca at a gathering of the Werekin, and he is just a pup and as the youngest grandchild of two very powerful werekin families, he is destined for greatness. When tragedy strikes Luca is separated from his family and believed dead, and Kane who tried to save him takes losing young Luca very hard.

Luca is found by a couple who raise him as a wolf they named Ghost, and they never realize the powerful being that they have in their home. I won't give much more away, but I will say that when Kane and Luca find each other again, sparks fly, no matter how ill timed they are.

Come on the journey with two souls who were destined to find each other and read what happens, both good and bad when they do! I must warn you, you will need book two right when you finish book one, I can't wait for it! Thanks Sj, for an epic tale of two men we can easily fall in love with!

Amazon.com Review
Baseball is another solid hit in the popular Dummies series. With its chatty style, snappy graphics, and enjoyably informative top-10 lists, the book sticks to the Dummies format better than most pitchers follow their catchers' signs, a plus to be sure. The real plus, though, resides in the deftness of Joe Morgan's voice. The former Hall of Fame second baseman-turned television analyst has proven himself a natural communicator in the booth; he comes across just as comfortable, informative, and thorough in print. His enthusiasm spills over, but not at the expense of his broad knowledge. Morgan, naturally, covers the bases--hitting, pitching, fielding, running, coaching--with plenty of whys teamed up with the requisite how-tos. For added expertise he calls on fellow pros such as Hall of Famer Bob Gibson and MVP third-baseman Ken Caminiti. Deceptively sophisticated, Baseball for Dummies is a marvelously good-natured introduction to the game, but it also hurls enough insight to hook baseball's more advanced students.

Tries to cover too many bases
By Robin C.
This book is fun to read and very well written. However, it seemed to try too hard to suit all audiences. The danger in that, of course, is that it doesn't do a great job for any one type of reader. I got this book for the basic baseball knowledge it contains--I recently got "hooked" on baseball, and wanted to know more about the rules, how to keep score, how statistics are computed and what they mean. And there is some of that in this book. However, a great deal more of the book is aimed at little leaguers--how to pick out equipment, how to practice, and so on. Then there are the sections on great players. I think the readers who pick up this book are going to want more in-depth information on the particular area they are interested in. So, this book may be your first book on baseball, but it won't be your last! Just whets the appetite, so to speak.
The book tries to do too much, and would have better served the reader by concentrating on one area. Nonetheless, Joe Morgan comes across as very knowledgeable and a great guy!

Seems to be designed for parents of Little Leaguers
By K. Hudson
I was hoping to get a primer on baseball that would help me to see and evaluate more of what was happening as I follow my team from my seat in the stands. What I got was mostly blah. Not up to the usual Dummies books, or perhaps I had too much background and I was looking for something more advanced? (I doubt THAT!) There is a decent glossary in the back and a page on keeping score and a chapter on the advantages and disadvantages of several Major League ballparks, but the rest was supremely forgettable to me. Your PYA (Page Yowza Average) may vary.

Aristotle's Teaching in the

With Aristotle’s Teaching in the “Politics,” Thomas L. Pangle offers a masterly new interpretation of this classic philosophical work. It is widely believed that the Politics originated as a written record of a series of lectures given by Aristotle, and scholars have relied on that fact to explain seeming inconsistencies and instances of discontinuity throughout the text. Breaking from this tradition, Pangle makes the work’s origin his starting point, reconceiving the Politics as the pedagogical tool of a master teacher.

With the Politics, Pangle argues, Aristotle seeks to lead his students down a deliberately difficult path of critical thinking about civic republican life. He adopts a Socratic approach, encouraging his students—and readers—to become active participants in a dialogue. Seen from this perspective, features of the work that have perplexed previous commentators become perfectly comprehensible as artful devices of a didactic approach. Ultimately, Pangle’s close and careful analysis shows that to understand the Politics, one must first appreciate how Aristotle’s rhetorical strategy is inextricably entwined with the subject of his work.

Review
“Thomas L. Pangle is an eminent political theorist whose interpretation of one of the fundamental books of the tradition will be widely welcomed. He employs, as always, an impressive range of scholarship, including not only the classical literature and most of the relevant contemporary scholarship, but an array of nineteenth-century scholars not often referenced or read. Aristotle’s Teaching in the 'Politics' is fresh and full of insight.” (Carnes Lord, translator of Aristotle’s “Politics”)

“A tour de force of textual exegesis and scholarly-philosophic engagement. This is the best book-length commentary on the Politics and among the best studies of Aristotle’s moral and political thought in general.” (Robert C. Bartlett, cotranslator of Aristotle’s “Nicomachean Ethics”)

“In recent decades, there has been an extraordinary wave of fine scholarship on Aristotle. It has therefore become increasingly difficult to write a new book on Aristotle’s Politics that is both original and good. Pangle’s commentary succeeds admirably. Through a careful exegesis, Pangle unpacks Aristotle’s text and illuminates the work’s multilayered rhetorical structure. . . . Understanding the literary character of the work allows readers to clearly understand its substance. . . . Anyone with a serious interest in understanding Aristotle will benefit from, and enjoy, reading this book. Highly recommended.” (Choice 2014-02-04)

"Those who worry that esoteric readings drag us down through one obscure rabbit hole after another can rest reassured. Pangle’s pursuit of the details that reveal the arguments behind Aristotle’s arguments is admirably clear, well-informed, and intelligent." (Review of Politics 2014-05-01)

“Pangle’s work stands out as an illuminating and clarifying interpretative approach to the important question which every studious reader of Aristotle’s Politics stumbles over.” (History of Political Thought 2015-05-22)

"Clearly a mature work of scholarship, informed by extended reflection on Aristotle's Politics and the subsequent tradition of political theory and philological commentary which has responded to it. . . . [Pangle's book] challenged me to look at the Politics in a light almost entirely unlike that which shines from contemporary Aristotle scholarship. Even if Aristotle may not always be the teacher Pangle claims he is—using clever rhetoric to provoke thought in his readers—Pangle himself often is.” (Classical Journal 2015-09-14)

"The greatest feature of Pangle’s commentary is that, by detailed scholarly exegesis, it has brought an interpretative approach occasionally criticised for its gnostic tendencies into a wider conversation. Factions opposing this approach can now array their forces for fighting the hermeneutical battle which Pangle offers. If they take this offer of battle seriously, with due attention to the surface and the whole of the text, it may serve to clarify and reform many of the assumptions prevalent in the interpretation of Aristotle. Such a contest will only enrich our reading of Aristotle and help us to grasp the profundity of Aristotelian philosophical practice.” (Oxonian Review 2015-09-14)

"Pangle’s insights as a political scientist help to bring life into philosophically less catchy material." (Philosophical Quarterly 2015-10-29)

“If you care about Aristotle, you will want to read Pangle’s Aristotle’s Teaching in the “Politics.” No other book on Aristotle is as well-versed in the existing scholarship, and no other book explicitly draws out as many perplexities from the political philosopher’s text with as much gusto.” (Perspectives on Political Science 2015-11-04)

“A welcome addition to the literature…. Although not strictly a commentary, Pangle's work blends summary and analysis, and serious students of the Politics will want to consult each of its discussions.”

“A significant and accomplished work that deserves our careful reflection.” (Mark Blitz, Claremont McKenna College, author of Plato's Political Philosophy Claremont Review of Books)

The superior companion to Aristotle's Politics
By Brisbane reader
Thomas L. Pangle's 'Aristotle's Teaching in the Politics" is currently the superior interpretative analysis and companion to Aristotle's Politics. The depth and rigour of his scholarship surpass any other single volume study. Chapter Three on Book Three is the centre of the work with the most important reflections. Alas, although one cannot slight the organisation of the book, all keen students of Aristotle's political teaching would probably love more exegesis of Books Four to Six on actual regimes.

Two criticisms sometimes raised against Pangle are that he likes to display his erudition and that his English prose style is not always the most prepossessing (Steven Lenzner called it "clotted prose"). Whatever the truth or importance of these comments I think most students will be grateful that Pangle does give us the benefit of his considerable erudition in clearly readable prose so these criticisms should not dissuade any able student from reading Pangle as a guide to Aristotle.

The beginning student of Aristotle's Politics might find Robert C. Bartlett's "Chapter 6, The Limits of Enlightenment: Aristotle's Politics" in his "The Idea of Enlightenment A Post-mortem Study" together with the relevant chapter from the Strauss and Cropsey "History of Political Philosophy" an easier and quicker entree to Aristotle's thought on politics then, when the student has actually studied the Politics thoroughly, Pangle's work would come into its own as a guide to its deeper teaching. The other very useful commentary I am aware of is Peter L. Simpson's "A Philosophical Commentary on The Politics of Aristole".

None of these works though come within cooee of Pangle's superior analysis and commentary of Aristotle's Politics. Also put out by The University of Chicago Press, it is the ideal companion to the second edition of Carnes Lord's translation of "Aristotle's Politics".

Bohemia in America, 1858-1920, by Joanna Levin

Bohemia in America, 1858–1920 explores the construction and emergence of "Bohemia" in American literature and culture. Simultaneously a literary trope, a cultural nexus, and a socio-economic landscape, la vie bohme traveled to the United States from the Parisian Latin Quarter in the 1850s. At first the province of small artistic coteries, Bohemia soon inspired a popular vogue, embodied in restaurants, clubs, neighborhoods, novels, poems, and dramatic performances across the country. Levin's study follows la vie bohme from its earliest expressions in the U.S. until its explosion in Greenwich Village in the 1910s.

Although Bohemia was everywhere in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American culture, it has received relatively little scholarly attention. Bohemia in America, 1858–1920 fills this critical void, discovering and exploring the many textual and geographic spaces in which Bohemia was conjured.

Joanna Levin not only provides access to a neglected cultural phenomenon but also to a new and compelling way of charting the development of American literature and culture.

Review
"In a thorough and insightful study of Bohemianism in the United States, Joanna Levin documents the significance of the term, 'part literary trope, part cultural nexus, and part socioeconomic landscape,' and traces its wavering course as the sign of cultural dissent, and of dissent emulated and commodified."—David M. Robinson, American Literary Realism

"Exhaustively researched and dynamically interdisciplinary, Levin persuasively challenges the widely held assumption that American Bohemianism was a 'feeble imitation' of its European counterpart. Instead, her text demonstrates the vitality of this American expression."—Forum for Modern Language Studies

"Bohemia in America is revisionist history in the best sense. Not only does it overturn received wisdom but it also reveals, on a vast canvas long assumed to be more or less blank, a vivid collage of scenes and portraits, rich in both concrete details and meaningful abstractions. . . Whether critiquing bohemia from an ideological distance or singing its praises, the dozens of contemporary voices that Levin captures make for a highly textured, engaging account. Bohemia in America is an important and authoritative book with remarkable reach."—Sarah Wadsworth, Journal of American History

"Joanna Levin's exhaustively researched and cogently argued survey, Bohemia in America, examines quite another slice of late-nineteenth-century cultural politics. . . The standout chapters of this book examine the domestication and merchandising of 'bohemia' as a concept and a brand." —Kevin R. McNamara, American Literature

"Levin's distinctions among various regional bohemias lends a sound organizational structure to her book, and Harte is but one of an impressive assembly of writers who undergo fresh assessment . . . This well-researched and sharply written study will serve to introduce a novel subject to some readers and provide a solid foundation for subsequent scholars interested in exploring a compelling and colorful chapter in American literature and culture."—Kent P. Ljungquist, Resources for American Literary Study
"[Bohemia in America] offers a carefully argued and supported thesis, and provides cultural historians and literary scholars with fresh insights into cultural resistance and accommodation."—Thomas Lawrence Long, Canadian Journal of History
"Because of Levin's depth of research and polished prose, Bohemia in America offers readers an incredibly rich look at a fertile period in American arts . . . As long as discontented souls seek la vie bohme, Levin's book should stand as a cornerstone of counterculture criticism."—Brett C. Sigurdson, Western American Literature
"Joanna Levin's Bohemia in America, 1858-1920 promises to fill a niche in the history of American literature and culture by providing a timely and comprehensive account of 'the textual and geographic spaces in which Bohemia was conjured'."—Wendy Graham, Vassar College
"The research contained in Bohemia in America is impeccable, indeed, extraordinary. It will make an important contribution to late nineteenth and early twentieth-century US literary studies. The arguments the book offers are smart, and make us look at familiar questions—the relation between bohemian and bourgeois, the consolidation and reticulation of middle-class culture, and many more—in a new and more complex light."—Jonathan Freedman, University of Michigan
"Readers will find much to admire in this history of Bohemianism in America. Levin's dynamic historical narrative, her impeccable research, and her ever-changing cast of literary and cultural figures make for an engaging and rewarding survey of an often-neglected movement . . . Highly recommended."—Choice
"[T]he book treats Bohemia as a cultural identity that draws on even while confounding our current categories: it is ethnic, racial, gendered, local, national, transnational, geographic, utopian, historical, ahistorical—all and none of these. Perhaps the profoundest challenge and intervention that this book produces lies in its ability to confound the taxonomies on which Americanists rely in their engagement with nineteenth century culture. While much scholarship over the past decades has challenged our cultural epistemologies in productive ways, this book shows how messy the historical past is, and thus unsettles our habit of taxonimizing its conflicting strands."—Colleen Glenney Boggs, New Books on Line 19

Casual Easy Graciousness
By r g stone
This book, originally published in 1984 in France, collects 10 magazine-like pieces. They contrast with Francois Sagan’s fiction, in which in even the most turbulent situations, her narrators tend toward ironic restraint. Here she tells about her enthusiasms, among them driving at high speed and gambling, and about people she admires, among them Billie Holiday and Jean Paul-Sartre. To borrow a phrase she uses to describe Rudolf Nureyev as she knew him socially, throughout her style has “a casual easy graciousness.” Especially interesting to me are her account of her early reading and its effect on her as a writer, and her account of her ventures into the theater.

An Enduring Classic
By LL
This book is a classic. Richard Scarry's work has entertained generations of children. These are not traditional 'story books' that are intended to be read aloud to a child. Instead, an adult and child will both enjoy looking through the engaging pictures together. Young children will learn useful words (animals, numbers, colors, body parts, objects found in the home and the city, etc.). Older children can have conversations with an adult or sibling about the illustrations. Learning to read is also fun with this book - children will immediately recognize an object and then learn to associate letters and sounds with familiar words. The charming illustrations will engross children for hours - perfect entertainment for long trips and vacations. I have noticed that boys are especially fond of Richard Scarry's work.

A classic that every household with young children should own
By Daniel L. Edelen
As someone who has entered his second half-century of life, I can remember as a youngster the impact of Richard Scarry books. Even when I had outgrown the simple language in his books and was reading more sophisticated fare, the whimsical pictures and busy events depicted in the books were still a source of joy.

Which is why it's surprising that a lot of parents today have not heard of Scarry.

That's a shame, because his books have a wonderfully engrossing quality that draws in children like few other books on the market today. Scarry's anthropomorphic animal kingdom is filled with crazy happenings and near disasters as its characters navigate their world. The illustrations contain an attention to detail that undoubtedly served as an inspiration for the "Where's Waldo" books, as little events occur in hidden places and drive curiosity and exploration of the pictures and text.

This "Best Word Book Ever" is a large format book that helps beginning readers attach words to images. In this, it's exemplary, and will keep youngsters reading for hours. The simple item labels occur within a context that helps children understand how words and what they describe fit together. It's simple, yet brilliant, stuff.

The best recommendation I can give: This book belongs in every household with young children. It's so good, it may be one of those that gets handed down from one generation to next. I know, because that's what I did, passing down this book that I loved as a child to my own son. And I just gave a copy to my young nephew this past Christmas.

Truly essential.

Unabrided versus abridged versions of the book
By Gagewyn
I got the unabridged version of this book. So, I'm going to write to doing that, rather than getting the current edition.

Here's what the book is: The Best Word Book Ever has pages and pages of vocabulary building illustrations. Each two page spread covers a different topic, and the pages are nice and big so lots of pictures of objects related to that topic can fit on each page, along with captions. Each page also has a short sentence about the scene, and a question your child can try to answer while looking at the illustrations. For example, for actions, the question is "What is one thing you can't do?" And, when you look at the pictures of animals, a fly is flying, and the caption points out that you can't do it. The question for each page is something I especially like, because it can make a child slow down and try to study or read the page more. And some questions are more open ended (ie. What do you think each animal will do next?) so the child won't just memorize and point to the answer on the 5th reading.

The back story is that when this was first published in 1963, it had 92 pages. Then, in 1980, it was changed to the new revised edition which has 71 pages and is still in print today, as of 2014. That new revised edition also went back and politically corrected each page. For "Toys", a pig shooting marbles got a dress and bow and went from male to female, and lots of genders changed. And, on the cover illustration, mom in the kitchen alone was redrawn to mom and dad cooking together in the kitchen. Other changes are more hmmm? For "Keeping Healthy", a big scarey looking rhinocerous dentist was changed to a cuddly looking bear dentist. Maybe so kids won't be scared of the dentist?

Anyway, on to the unabridged edition:

The biggest advantage to buying an unabridged copy is the extra pages. I get 20 more pages, or 10 extra 2 page spreads of scenes, that are edited out of the current edition. I have to say, though, that the removed pages feel choppier to me. So, in my 1969 edition, some pages have a nice illustration that stretches across the full two page spread, and some have characters dotting the page like clip art. Those ones that are more like clip art dotting the page are the ones that got removed. Lots of the reviewers complaining about the abridgement go on about the Flower Garden being removed, but really it is just pictures of different flowers against a white background. There is no garden, or path through it. It's like clip art.

The biggest disadvantage to buying an unabridged copy is the hassle of getting one. Amazon merged all the pages and all the reviews for both the older longer edition, and a board book version which is a board book with 2 foot high pages. So, good luck figuring out what you are reading a review for, when you read any given review. It could be a 92 page book, it could be a 72 page book, it could be a 24 page board book that is 2 feet tall. And, good luck buying used copies from any bug resellers, because it's much more likely for them to post the book under the wrong edition. What a mess. "Standard used condition" tells you nothing about condition or what book you are getting. So, you are stuck reading book descriptions to find something that lists the 92 page count. It's less clean than with a book that is truly 100% out of print. And, also, my used copy came tore up - just tore up. It's old and it's a children's book, so that's two things going against you getting a nice clean copy no matter how much you shop for one.

If you want a taste of the older book, without buying on, the "Best Storybook Ever" has several pages from the 1963 edition of the Best Word Book Ever. It has "In the Flower Garden", which is the removed page that most people seem to miss most. It also has several other scenes from the Best Word Book Ever, and it has those scenes reproduced from the 1963 edition. So, they politically corrected Best Work Book Ever, but didn't take those corrections over to the same exact reproduced pages in Best Storybook Ever. You can hop on over to that book and use "Look Inside" to see "The Rabbit Family's House" on page 8 of Best Storybook Ever with mom cooking alone in the kitchen. The only edits there are to change from larger pages in this book to smaller pages in that one.

Really, if you are missing the old unabridged Best Word Book Ever, then Best Storybook Ever is a good option, because it's so much simpler to buy and you can get it new and clean.

A humorous and heartwarming story
By KidsReads
Eighth-grade student Kevin Spencer is cute and funny --- and a bit full of himself. In his 14 years, he has developed interpersonal skills with the knowledge that "the best way to make other people like you is to show them how great you think they are."

In the past, Kevin's manipulative ways of getting people to like him and do what he wants have been successful to some degree. Now he's working on romance. Kevin considers himself the "most romantic guy you'll ever meet," except that he's never had a girlfriend. In fact, he has never even gone out on a real date. He's hoping to change all that by asking Katrina Maria Zabinski to a middle-school dance. Tina, whose laugh "sounds like bells or angels," is the most beautiful girl he has ever seen.

One day, after working up the courage to spring the question on Tina, Kevin walks into the cafeteria and sees her sitting at the lunch table with another guy. To make matters worse, Cash Devine, the new kid at school, has the looks and confidence of a "male-model wannabee."

To win Tina's heart, and learn all about romance, Kevin decides to take a scientific approach and create experiments to observe the behaviors of test subjects. By applying the principles of scientific method, he believes he can understand the chemistry between males and females. In Kevin's mind, to unleash his "inner Casanova," he has to tap into his "inner umm, Copernicus."

The budding Casanova's experiments begin with his family. His observation of his parents, with the help of his young neighbor Markie, ends dismally. Frequently married and often divorced Auntie Buzz doesn't have the best track record in the lasting romance department. Kevin turns to his sister Sarah for help, but she turns the tables on him, which is an eye-opening experience. Kevin's observations of his hockey-playing brother Daniel and some other skating stars yield promising results. Then there are his experiments with health-nut and best friend JonPaul, along with friends Dash and Wheels. His direct attempt at questioning Connie Shaw gets messy, but he learns an important lesson.

While implementing his scientific approach, Kevin reaffirms Sir Isaac Newton's Third Law of Motion "that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." He also comes to agree with Francis Bacon that "Truth emerges more readily from error than from confusion." In the end, Kevin discovers that the scientific mind is no match for action.

CRUSH is the follow-up to Gary Paulsen's LIAR, LIAR and FLAT BROKE, and readers of these previous books will recognize Kevin's friends and family, and will be introduced to a few new characters. Deftly woven into the story line are some scientific terms and principles. Seen through Kevin's worldview, CRUSH is a humorous and heartwarming story about the wonderful and mysterious matters of the heart.

Kevin….Ambitious….AND Crushing over a Girl….Cute Read!!!!
By NICOLE S
Another one of Gary Paulsen's books. It too, is a quick and easy read. Again, Kevin is ambitious, but if he continues on the track he's on, he is likely to lose his opportunity to date Tina Zabinski. If every child was as ambitious as Kevin, they would have an impressive life resume.

For instance, in the first book, "Liar, Liar",- Kevin was deceptive calculated and manipulative; yet creative in his approach in the second book, "Flat Broke,"- Kevin knew he had no money- so he was calculated and manipulative, yet creative in his approach, and in this book, "Crush"- he knows his past history, so he doesn't want to mess up his chances he MIGHT have with TINA sooooo-

If you read this book, you will see through Kevin's eyes, a need to apply the scientific method in approaching a girl properly so that he doesn't make the same mistakes he's made in the past run-in's with Tina- the girl of his dreams. BUT will he have time because there is a "New Kid on the Block"- Cash Devine, or is the Scientific Method really necessary in the dating department?

Again, Cute, Quick and Easy Read. Another fun one by Gary Paulsen. In my opinion, you will enjoy it. Happy Reading!

Kristi's Book Nook via CLCD
By Kristi Bernard
Have you ever noticed how hard young love can be? Kevin Spencer has got a ridiculously bad crush on Tina, unfortunately, he isn't real good at asking beautiful girls out on dates. But, he has a plan. Basically he is going to take it slow and play it cool before he makes his move, that is until Tina is caught hanging out with Cash Devine, a new cute boy at school. Kevin now decides it might make more sense to take a more scientific approach regarding matters of the heart. Kevin attempted to observe his parents but that was a disaster. He cooked a fantastic dinner for them only to have them become suspicious, clumsy and wonder why he was spying on them. He went to Auntie Buzz, who lived over the garage, but her advice was outdated and a little nutty. In a last attempt of desperation he went to his sister Sarah. To his surprise she contacted her girl clan and set up a boot camp for Kevin, but that didn't work either. All Kevin got was a bunch of criticism from the know-it-all girls who, at the end of the day, thought he was a lost cause. Kevin then decided he must get aggressive. He needed to observe a relationship from the very beginning so that he can learn how it develops and ultimately how it works. His great idea is to help his brother find a girlfriend, with the hopes of learning how to get and keep Tina' attention. Paulsen has created another hilarious tale for middle grade boys to enjoy and laugh along with the characters. School shenanigans of adolescents will have young readers laughing and turning the pages for more of this really fast paced read.

A great book, but it's more of an accessory than a necessity.
By Monty Michaels
First, keep in mind that this work was published in 1981. Secondly, keep in mind that this is not about current scandals or conspiracies in the Church. If you are expecting a lot of discussion from Malachi Martin on the latest intrigue and outrage at Vatican II, this is not that book.

Here is what the book is.

Martin begins the book with a brief narration of the state of the Church pre-312. Then, he points out that Pope Silvester's deal with Emperor Constantine was the beginning of the Roman Catholic Church's troubles. By allowing the Church to become intertwined with the affairs of the Empire, the Church became chained to this temporal world's affairs and drawbacks, and incidentally, the papacy has become corrupted by the whole process.

Then, from that point, Martin points out various examples of how the Church has become corrupted throughout history. Several amazing episodes that intrigued me can be found on page 109 (the story of the perverted 12-year old Pope, Theophylact), pages 124-125 (the account of cardinal Cesare Borgia, who wore a mask to hide a deformity, employed a personal assassin, was bisexual, and assassinated his own brother), and page 182 (the lack of attention to Martin Luther, due to overconcern with the imperial power of the Church's papal states). I was surprised to see that Martin didn't cover the Crusades much, but that's a different topic altogether, I guess.

Toward the end of the book, in the final section titled Decline and Fall, Martin brings attention to the Church's situation in the last century. It is at this point that you become grateful to Martin for having shown you the previous centuries of Church history. You can view the Church's modern plight in the context of its imperfect history.

Now, in this last section, Malachi Martin does not bring on condemning remarks about Pope John Paul II, and he is hesitant to criticize Pope John XXIII for the post-modern revisions of Vatican II. Rather, Martin sums up the entire downward movement of the Church, likening it to a snowball rolling down a mountain, rolling out of control after a certain point in history. (Martin really did a great job illustrating Napoleon's role in the West's secularization, by the way.)

Ultimately, this is a great book. It is great because it is well written, well thought out, and tied together nicely. In addition, any time a person can get an opportunity to hear Malachi Martin's take on Church history, they should take it! Martin has a unique perspective on these matters, and he is worth your attention.

As you can probably tell by the Amazon.com prices for used copies, it is rather expensive. I'm guessing that this is a bit of a rare book. Somehow, I managed to pre-order my copy, and I got it for $12. The copy I got was a novel-sized paperback that was about 260 pages. The price on the spine of my book was $3.95! This little thing is surely not worth $70! Yet, buy it if you must--though I'd encourage you to search the libraries first.

If you absolutely must have a book of Malachi Martins, I'd suggest Hostage to the Devil. Decline and the Fall of the Roman Church is more of an accessory than anything. It is not as much as a necessity as his other books.

The History of the Popes.
By New Age of Barbarism
_The Decline and Fall of the Roman Church_ by the late traditionalist Roman Catholic priest Father Malachi Martin is a fascinating account of the history of the church progressing from the earliest beginnings to Constantine's eventual relationship with the church during the reign of Pope Silvester I up until the post Vatican II popes and Pope John Paul II. The book shows the transformations that took place in the papacy as the relationship between temporal power and spiritual authority was worked out throughout the years. Also, the book shows how the early popes were chosen, including how many were appointed by kings or their predecessors (often involving intrigue and poisonings), up until the invention of the conclave. While the Roman Popes certainly were not impeccable, their spiritual authority in matters of faith and morals is guarranteed by the words of Christ himself. Much of this book is spent reviewing the many scandals and intrigues of the popes who often acted in a manner more befitting a petty despot than the spiritual authority of the world's strongest religion. Father Malachi Martin's thesis is that the church exists in a state of steady decline, brought about by a defection from its true principles, and an abandonment of spiritual authority for temporal power. Indeed, the sins of man are many, due to his fallen nature, and throughout the centuries they have come to corrode the very structures upon which Christ built his church. This book, written in 1981 is somewhat dated but its prophecy for the coming decades remains valid. The complications which have arisen since the Second Vatican Counsel, the brazen disobedience of Christ's supposed faithful to the authority of the pope and his predecessors, the collusion of the hierarchy with liberalism, modernism, and Marxist revolution, and the moral decline of the modern age are issues which currently confront the church more than ever. Perhaps the modern age can be made sense of in terms of prophecy by rereading those prophecies of the saints which reveal a hidden meaning behind historical events. I regret only that the author did not provide adequate footnotes to his book so that his facts could be checked against standard sources. He appears to take some liberty with things that may be unjustifiable. Nevertheless, for its important remarks concerning the coming and continuing crises within the church (recently brought to light in the many scandals among the priesthood and the hierarchy) this book remains of fundamental interest to all who want to understand the history and progression of the Roman Catholic Church and its papacy.

An insider's critique
By Doug Erlandson
As a Protestant it is easy for me to list the flaws of the Catholic church. When a Roman Catholic priest writes a book that casts a critical eye at the church, what he writes is far more credible. Such is "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Church," by the late Jesuit Malachi Martin.

The thesis of this book is straightforward. Beginning with a description of the Faustian bargain between Emperor Constantine and Pope Sylvester, Martin goes on to describe the steps by which the church not only gained temporal power but made progressively stronger claims regarding its authority over all earthly powers, including the civil rulers, in its attempt to gain full control of what it regarded as Christendom. We read, for example, of the crowning of Charlemagne by Leo III on Christmas Day 800, an event that marked the birth of what became the Holy Roman Empire. Although one might see this as a moment of triumph for the civil ruler, it was really a victory for the papacy. By giving the pope the authority to install the civil ruler in his position, it symbolized the authority of the pope over the ruler.

Thus the power of the papacy continued to grow through the time of Gregory V and his humiliation of Henry IV at Canossa, through the reign of Innocent III, when, by all accounts the power of the pope was at its zenith, until the time of Boniface VIII, when the pretentious claims of "Unam Sanctum" for the power of the sword of the church over the temporal sword could no longer be backed up and Boniface suffered his own humiliation.

Thankfully, the history of the papacy does not end there. As Martin fully acknowledges, the papacy's understanding of its power has changed under the guidance of recent popes. In particular, he notes how Paul VI and his successors have replaced the idea of the church as a kingdom with that of an institution that has been uniquely called as a servant of "the people of God."
