In Chapter 21, students are introduced to multi-step syntheses of organic compounds, a practice well known in chemical industry. In Chapter 23, students are asked to solve structures of unknown compounds. The new chapter 24 introduces a meaningful experiment into the textbook that reflects the increasing emphasis on bioorganic chemistry in the sophomore-level organic lecture course. This experiment not only gives students the opportunity to accomplish a mechanistically interesting and synthetically important coupling of two a-amino acids to produce a dipeptide but also provides valuable experience regarding the role of protecting groups in effecting synthetic transformations with multiple functionalized molecules.

About the Author
Jack Gilbert joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 1965 and moved to Santa Clara University in 2007, where he is Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He received the Advisory Council Teaching Excellence Award at UT the 2002-2003 academic year, as well as many other recognitions in teaching. While at UT, he co-authored several editions of the first laboratory textbook in organic chemistry that emphasized reactions mechanisms, as well as laboratory techniques, including spectroscopy. He continues to update the textbook, now with the able assistance of Steve Martin.

Stephen Martin received his B. S. degree in chemistry from the University of New Mexico in 1968 and his Ph.D. degree from Princeton University in 1972. After postdoctoral years at the University of Munich and MIT, he joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin in 1974, where he currently holds the M. June and J. Virgil Waggoner Regents Chair in Chemistry. His research interests lie broadly in organic and bioorganic chemistry. In the former area, his endeavors involve developing and applying new methods and strategies to the syntheses of biologically active natural and non-natural products, especially those containing nitrogen and oxygen heterocyclic subunits. In the biological arena, he is studying fundamental aspects of molecular recognition in biological systems with a particular focus on how making specific structural changes in a ligand, particularly with respect to preorganization and nonpolar surface area, affect energetics and dynamics in protein-ligand interactions. He has received a number of awards including a NIH Career Development Award, an American Cyanamid Academic Award, an Alexander von Humboldt Award, an Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, a Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science Award, a Wyeth Research Award, and the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry Senior Award. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has served as a consultant for a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. He is the regional editor of "Tetrahedron for the Americas." He has delivered numerous invited lectures at national and international meetings, academic institutions, and industrial companies, and has published over 300 scientific papers in primary journals together with several reviews and articles in books. He is also co-author of "Experimental Organic Chemistry: A Miniscale and Microscale Approach."

Rather good book

So this happens to be a rather solid book. I am not an Organic Chemist so I needed to review the "basics" and this book is stellar. If you have the basics down this is not the boo for you. The writing is basically for an advanced undergraduate level. Better than my other OChem book for sure.

This book writen by Gilbert and Martin provides an excellent help to the student who is currently studying organic chemistry. It is full of useful information and it provides assistance for the completion of the organic labs. it is full of helpful pointers and they provide alot of useful knowledge

decent lab manual but not the greatest

I used this lab manual for organic chemistry I and II lab at the undergrad level, and it was a pretty decent book. The background and prelab info is sufficient and gives you some insight to the underlying chemistry behind the experiment. However, unless you're taking an organic chemistry lecture concurrently that is in line with the text, then you will be lost in terms of understanding the chemistry behind what you're doing, and you'll be searching for answers online.

they've released a newer edition of this text which is extremely expensive, but the content is the same. they've only switched around some of the pages so the pagination is only off slightly. I would get this edition rather than the newer one since it is much much cheaper for the same material.

This is a GREAT, great book for learning veterinary micro. I've read and bought (unfortunately) a few books on the matter and it would have been nice if I had bought this one first....would have saved me some money, and I would have a more fluent understanding of the matter at this point.

Ten experts explain how to communicate clearly and persuasively, especially in stressful situations

This is one in a series of volumes that anthologizes what the editors of the Harvard Business Review consider to be the "must reads" in a given business subject area, in this instance communication. I have no quarrel with any of their selections, each of which is eminently deserving of inclusion. Were all of these article purchased separately as reprints, the total cost would be $60 and the value of any one of them exceeds that. Given the fact that Amazon now sells this one for only $14.71, that's quite a bargain. The same is true of volumes in other series such as "Harvard Business Review on...." and "Harvard Business Essentials." I also think there is great benefit derived from the convenience of having essential, basic information as well as a variety of perspectives and insights gathered in a single volume.

In all of the volumes in the "10 Must Read" series that I have read thus far, the authors and HBR editors make skillful use of several reader-friendly devices that include "Idea in Brief" and "Idea in Action" sections, checklists with and without bullet points, boxed mini-commentaries (some of which are "guest" contributions from other sources, and graphic charts and diagrams that consolidate especially valuable information. These and other devices facilitate, indeed accelerate frequent review later of key points later.

Those who read this volume will gain valuable information, insights, and counsel that will help them to pitch their brilliant idea with high-impact, connect with their audience, establish their credibility, inspire others to embrace and pursue their vision, adapt to stakeholders concerns and decision-making styles, frame goals that are supported by common interests, and build a consensus and then increase it with additional support.

From "Telling Tales," Stephen Denning (115-130): Denning provides within his article what he characterizes as "A Storytelling Catalog" of seven approaches: sparking action, communicating who you are, transmitting values, fostering collaboration, taming the grapevine, sharing knowledge, and leading people into the future. The format begins with purpose ("If your objective is..."), proceeds to the appropriate type (You will need a story that..."), indicates what is required ("In telling it, you will need..."), and suggests a probable impact ("Your story will inspire responses such as...") Decades ago while teaching English at a boarding school in New England, I formulated an acronym that may also be helpful: EDNA. That is, Exposition explains with information, Description makes vivid with compelling details e.g. "My foot's asleep and it feels like ginger ale"), Narration tells a story (plot) or explains a sequence, and Argumentation convinces with logic and/or evidence. It is certainly not a coincidence that each of the greatest leaders throughout history was a great storyteller.

From "Taking the Stress Out of Stressful Conversations," Holly Weeks" (165-180): At work, stressful conversations take various forms. Here's how to prepare for them:

"1. Be aware of your weaknesses to particular people and situations. You'll thus avoid succumbing to your feelings and ignoring your needs during a stressful conversation.

"2. Know [begin italics] how [end italics] you tend to react when feeling vulnerable. Do you bare your teeth when facing an overbearing competitor? Shut down when feeling excluded? Knowing your danger zones, you can anticipate your vulnerabilities and improve your responses.

"3. With an honest, non-judgmental friend, rehearse clear, neutral, and temperate responses to whatever comments you find most irritating. Get out everything you're thinking [begin italics] and feeling [end italics], then refine your phrasing until it best expresses your message -- in an honest, non-threatening way. Eliminate emotionally charged behaviors [e.g. tone of voice and body language]. Write down your most effective phrasings for future use."

For anyone interested in improving their communication skills, this is the book for you. I am interested in switching from Finance to Human Resource and this book was a great resource. The books detail various ways to improve how you communicate, with co-workers, managers, direct reports, etc. The book is an easy read and not too many pages; you can finish the book within 2-3 hours easily. It is best to take your time and read it carefully; it is important not to pass up any important information. Great book and will be a resource for years to come.

About the Author
Carl T. Bergstrom is a professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Washington in Seattle and a member of the external faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. He received his undergraduate degree in 1993 from Harvard University where he worked with Naomi Price and David Haig, and his PhD in 1998 from Stanford University where he worked with Marc Feldman. His postdoctoral work was done with Bruce Levin at Emory University. Dr. Bergstrom’s research uses mathematical models and evolutionary theory to understand biological and social processes on scales from intracellular information processing to the population-wide spread of emerging infectious diseases. In addition to teaching the undergraduate evolution course at the University of Washington, Dr. Bergstrom teaches courses on evolution and medicine, game theory and animal behavior, and mathematical biology.

Lee Alan Dugatkin is a professor and Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Biology at the University of Louisville. His main area of research is the evolution of social behavior. He is currently studying the evolution of cooperation, aggression, antibiotic resistance, risk-taking behavior, and the interaction between genetic and cultural evolution. Dr. Dugatkin is the author of over 145 articles on evolution and behavior in journals such as Nature and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and several trade monographs on the evolution of cooperation and the history of science. He is also the author of Principles of Animal Behavior, Second Edition.

Informative book!

This book was great to have, and contains information that would make both the neophyte and the senior geologist happy. It is divided into two parts, a non-technical part with road trips, outcrop locations, environmental considerations, tectonics, orogenies, etc... along with color pictures of the things Vera discusses. Then there was the technical section that contained all of the pertinent formations, their characteristics, locations, geologic histories, and stratigraphies. Also, some interesting things about the reservoir rocks in the Amazon Basin were presented as well.

A great book to help understand Ecuadorian geology.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I live in Cuenca, Ecuador and have been curious about the geology and rock formations of Ecuador for a long time. This book covers in details the basics, and then goes into much detail about the different geological provinces in Ecuador. Also included is a "tour roads" guide that is very helpful in finding future locations to research. I have travelled cross country all over Ecuador now for 3 years and this book gives me new ideas and places to visit. For example, the next visit to Quito we will drive by the old prison to find the closed down quarry and collect a rock specimen similar to the one pictured in this book featuring a rainbow side section. This book really is great and so far I have only gotten through half of it. The other half is fairly scientific and covers in great details the rock and soil compositions and how they relate to the geological history of Ecuador. The book also features many drawings, diagrams and charts to help you understand more about this beautiful country.

I hope to see the 2nd edition out soon! I would like to see some more pictures and more information on geology and how it affects Ecuador commercially. This might include rock climbing, canyoning, Cueva de los Toyas expedition and interior research (pics), mountain biking, etc. These activities are very popular and many of these types of people would be interested in this book. I would love to see more information as it relates to these sports activities in the future. Also, a field guide section that would allow you to possibly identify popular types of rocks in Ecuador while you do the tour roads activities.

Overall this is a great book and the best one written on Ecuador geology in particular. I was able to buy a signed copy directly from the author, Ram�n Vera. Great author and a nice guy. Keep up the hard work and I look forward to buying the 2nd edition when it comes out!

Best book available in any language re geology of Ecuador. Published in 2013. Buy it. The only thing that comes close is The Physical Geography of South America (Oxford Regional Environments), but it is not as good.

The information is delivered simply - charmingly illustrated scenes of sleeping animals and their habitats juxtaposed with a four-line rhyme and a fact box. From flamingoes to platypuses, the scenes are elegantly done, but never overly arty - it's impossible not to smile at illustrator Roberta Baird's rendition of a dozing sea otter. The Sleep Facts! boxes offer lots of points for discussion - the differences in the ways many animals prefer to sleep, as well as their ideal habitats, and wonderful details about the animals themselves, but this information is never overwhelming. While the majority of the rhymes are pitch-perfect for both the audience and the subject matter, readers may find themselves stumbling here and there over a few forced lines. This book, however, offers solid, engaging nonfiction for toddlers and preschoolers about one of their favorite subjects: the animal kingdom. This makes a great addition to any children's collection, and will be a terrific support to early childhood educators in their lesson plans and circle time. Thomas Heffron is director of communications for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a graduate of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. He is the author of the children's picture book The Animals Sleep: A Bedtime Book of Biomes, which is also published by the AASM. Thomas lives outside Chicago with his wife and children.

Fun and Informative

A playful book for the younger set but also factual for more inquisitive kids. The illustrations perfectly pair with each chosen animal to complete the short lesson on animal sleep habits. A very unique format that will help get your kids to calm down and dream away about their favorite animals.

I was privileged to hear Thomas do a public reading of this book to a group of kids. It is beautifully illustrated and includes a variety of animals that the kids found very interesting. He is also a comfortable communicator. We picked this up for our family and look forward to many bedtime readings as we ease our own little ones off to a great nights' sleep!

Everyone should have this book!

I don't know how this book hasn't been in my life earlier, but I am so grateful it is now. You can read the whole thing or just flip through it. I enjoy discussing issues with my friends and looking through "The Food Bible" to help them get through their issues. The first part is explanation of nutrition and the second half is all broken up into sections of food to cure what ails you. You can look up Hangovers to Anxiety and it will tell you what you should avoid eating and what you should be eating with some recipes as well. I love Gillian and am so grateful for her passion to improve our lifestyles.

Praying for good health? Gillian McKeith's Food Bible helps too!

Each of us has health concerns, although some might not be willing to admit it. In my family, the concern is diabetes . . . it can be traced all the way back to my great, great grandfather. My grandpa, my dad, his two brothers and my sister were unlucky enough to be afflicted by this disease, a disease which frequently damages each and every one of our major organs. My grandpa often had just ice cream or pancakes for dinner, and died at only 55 of a heart attack. Perhaps a better diet could have extended his life.

Gillian McKeith has presented a comprehensive, factual, and useful manual on food, food which helps determine whether we acquire diseases and conditions such as diabetes and obesity. I am sure each and every one of you has a disease to which you may be genetically predisposed, and if you're wise you'll try to do something about it before it is too late. Love this book! I would recommend it to anyone who is sick of wasting money on expensive perscriptions. I know that sometimes it is necessary to take persciptions drugs, but a lot of illnessess could be avoided if we'd just eat correctly.
