About the Author
A native of the First State, Chris Ryan has an A.B. in Physics from Harvard University. Worth every penny

This book has been great for me as I head to business school this fall. I haven't yet been there to verify its accuracy, but the introductions and tips have been invaluable so far. Or, at least, worth more than the price of the book and the time required to read it.

Of course, there are plenty of things in it you won't need, but if you needed everything in the book, you wouldn't have gotten into business school. The only way they can give you what you need is by including everything and letting you find it.

They also have a very readable style and offer "insider" tips and details, like how to pronounce all those acronyms you're running across in MBA blogs and management literature. Sure, you know what they mean, but how do people say them? Those are the types of tips that prove to me they know what we need to hear.

There are better values for the money and time

The author's quick refreshers of the background class material was somewhat helpful. Overall, this book did not have very much depth and was more focused on the fun potential and status of an MBA. It is not a title for the serious applicant.

Easy to read and with some great tips for MBA ...

Easy to read and with some great tips for MBA students both inside and outside the classroom. Slightly more useful for full-time as opposed to part-time students as the sections on housing and quitting your current job wouldn't normally apply to PT students. The overview of major topics (e.g. financial accounting) encountered in any MBA program is particularly helpful as is the career building section with tips on networking and interviewing.

"Divided We Stand, United We Fall"

First of all, I should say that this book is marred by a horrible title: "This House Has Fallen: Midnight in Nigeria" (previous edition). Quite a poor choice for the title of a book that isn't as half as dark as you'd expect from its name. In this case, you literally shouldn't judge this book by its cover.

The title of this review, however, refers to an apt quote that comes in the last chapter of the book. The quote would have been more appropriately presented in the introduction, because the entire book is seemingly built on its theme. The theme is that Nigeria is essentially a collection of very proud, insulated societies and cultures that desire independence but are held together by a government based on strictly colonial boundaries. With my knowledge of Nigeria and Nigerian history, I really agree with that. There is no such thing as Nigerian nationalism except in Nigerian communities outside of Nigeria. Even then, a Yoruba is always a Yoruba and a Hausa always a Hausa. Doing ethnographic fieldwork in Ghana, a group of migrant Hausas warned me against traveling to Nigeria: "Nigerians are wicked, wicked people!"

This book explains crises in Nigeria in several different areas. First, the book spends a few chapters quite appropriately on the Niger Delta crisis and the Ijaws. It articulates the argument quite well that the responsibility for this crisis falls right in the lap of oil companies and the Nigerian government. The book then deals with northern Nigeria and the rise of fundamentalist Islam. It rightly portrays the friction as between ethnic groups, and NOT between Muslims and Christians per sae. The end of the book is a patchwork of chapters on the Yoruba, the Igbo, and the Middle Belt minorities.

A great read. This book is a good alternative to "A History of Nigeria" (Cambridge University Press) because it is highly readable and focuses on pressing issues. It is essentially a piece of good journalism, but not as egocentric and cynical as a lot of the "poverty and danger tourism" writing typical of "Untapped: The Search for Africa's Oil." It doesn't exoticize Nigerians nor portray them as dangerous the way a lot of literature on Africa does. It balances political economy, indigenous liberation movements, and environmental issues all in one breath. It's amazing what Maier managed to pack into less than 300 pages. Read it.

You Are Welcome, Maier Cracks A Bit of Nigeria's Problems

Living in Nigeria leaves one drained, confused and fascinated. Nigeria is like watching a car crash every day; you cannot help but to watch despite the blood and carnage. Mr. Maier's lively account of daily scences in Nigeria is a accessible read for anyone, even those who never set foot in Nigeria or could care less about Africa's problems. A case in point is Maier's visit to former military President Babangida. The President sat in his chalet a few hours drive from Nigeria's capital Abuja, charming, sly, friendly and happy with the billions of dollars he stold from the Nigerian people. In fact, Babangida is set to make another run for President in 2007. Maier allows the former President to talk and expose the underbelly of most Nigerian leaders, avarice, self-righteousness and the ability to buy people off with the money taken from government coffers. In fact, be it Obasanjo, Abacha, Buhari or any other military leader or newly minted democratic leaders, they are all the same people, in the same big seats, stealing the same people and country blind. Sad, but Nigeria. Maier allows the reader in to see Nigeria from Abuja to Minna to Lagos; it is a great read and essential for anyone coming to Nigeria.

A Nice Book

A nice book that touches on key aspects of Nigerian society. For a foreigner, Mr. Maier does a nice job in writing about the diverse ethnic groups that make up Nigeria. However, I have chosen to rate this book with three stars for the following reasons:

At some point in time, I got the feeling I was reading a newspaper. Being well versed and current with affairs in Nigeria, I found most of the stories recounted by Mr. Maier to be very familiar. What Mr. Maier failed to do was provide significant in-depth analysis into the problems besetting modern day Nigeria, or better still, present likely solutions to some of these problems from his point of view.

There are quite a few typographical errors in the book. I also disagree with a historical event stated. This has to do with the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914. Mr. Maier says it was done because Northern Nigeria was running a deficit, while the South was economically sustainable. This is definitely not true. The Northern and Southern protectorates were merged to form Nigeria in 1914 to serve the interests of the British Empire. Mineral resources obtained in the North were shipped to ports in the South to be sent to Britain. It made economic sense to Britain and had nothing to do with deficits or the economic state of the Northern and Southern colonies.

Generally, it is a very good book and one that touches on several aspects of modern Nigerian society in its 300 or so pages. It is definitely worth the read if you are interested in understanding the complexity and diversity of Nigerian society as well as its history, economic state and recent return to a democratic system of government.

Factual report on USA/Mexican border crossings

This book was written in the late '70's and is still true today. Only the numbers of illegal crossings have changed and they were high then; astronomical today. The book recalls an experiement that lasted just over a year.

The San Diego Police Department sent specially trained undercover police officers into the canyons of the border to intercept drug gangs and other bad actors. In the process, they also intercepted illegal aliens in their attempts to cross into the USA. Sometimes their intervention saved the lives of illegal aliens from harm dealt out by the gangs, the coyotes, and indeed, even the Mexican policia!

Wambaugh has written many superb police accounts based on fact. He presents them with grit, humor, and truth.

An Incredible Story, But Gets Lost In the Telling

Lines and Shadows relates an amazing series of events on the US/Mexican border. The book describes either a very heroic group of San Diego police officers, or an out-of-control group of gunslingers, depending on how you look at things. The events occurred in the 1980's, although the book is fairly recent.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* The story is truly amazing, bordering on unbelievable. I won't spoil the details for anyone, but if this was a work of fiction, you'd think it was over the top. In a nutshell, a group of San Diego police officers form a special task force to combat violence in the border crossing area...and become quite violent themselves.

* Wambaugh seems to have spent quite a bit a time with at least some of the principals in the group. There are some very detailed recollections of events, dialogs and thoughts. The story is fairly complete, and takes us through a whole phase in the officer's lives. Wambaugh captures much of the darker side of police officer's lives, including infidelity, alcoholism and a few assorted felonies.

* The story is spell-binding, and I got sucked up into reading the book. I won't say that it reached "can't put it down" status, but I did keep going back to it and wanted to see how it ended.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* I have never been a fan of Joseph Wambaugh's style. The story seems to get lost in his attempts to capture witty dialog, cool language and clever turns of phrase. I found some of the individual events difficult to comprehend and am still not sure I understand what happened in several of them.

* The text seems to repeat itself, and many of the descriptions just run together. As a brief example, the 393rd time the environment and inhabitants of the area are described as "smelling like garbage", I was more than ready to concede the point. Many of the descriptions and dialogs seem quite detailed for events that happened nearly 30 years ago.

* My biggest complaint is the shallowness of the story. The book relates a fascinating tale of meeting criminal violence with police violence. There were some very positive results, along with some rather nasty events. It would have been nice if the author had stepped back a bit and examined the larger implications of this. More simply, did the end justify the means?

If you are a fan of police stories, this one is fairly unusual and different from the usual one. It reads much like Wambaugh's other books, which have always struck me as more of a proposal for a screenplay than serious works of non-fiction. But the book is readable, the story is fantastic, and you will walk away shaking your head. I'd recommend it for fans of the genre, but you might want to read a sample page or two and make sure you are comfortable with the author's style.

About the Author
Hugh Fordin has been a producer in both theater and film. As head of casting for David Merrick, he was involved in the making of M*A*S*H, Hello Dolly!, and Play It Again, Sam. The author of The Movies' Greatest Musicals: The Freed Unit at MGM, he lives in New York City, where he is the president of DRG Records.

The text of this book is very interesting. It's more of a nuts and bolts of how the movies were put together than a critque of the movies themselves.

However, beware if you are replacing an older edition of this book. This edition is inferior to one that I had years ago. The pictures in this version look like they were photocopied from an earlier version of the book. Many are grainy and washed out. Also, a number of the pictures at the tops of pages are cropped so that tops of some of the heads are cut off. I know this wasn't how earlier versions of this book looked. Although a minor point, in the back of previous editions there was a list of much money each film cost, as well as the domestic and foreign grosses of each film. I found this interesting, and I was sorry to see it missing.

Sensational -- as history and as entertainment!

There are various books about the golden years at MGM, but this is far and away the best I've ever read. It is an exhaustive look at how each of the great MGM musicals was made, with all sorts of info from producer Arthur Freed's private files -- the costs, the money made or lost, etc. (Imagine, an author who actually went and spoke to the people he was writing about, as opposed to a mere gossip gatherer!) There is lots of solidly researched behind the scenes material, making this believable as well as readable. Loads of great photos you won't see elsewhere. For musical film buffs, this is essential reading!

I was expecting this to be a straight biography of Arthur Freed with discussions on his films but instead I was pleasantly surprised to see that the entire book is a blow-by-blow account of how the films were made (which to a movie buff is pure heaven) and, as the author says, Freed's movies were his life anyway.
I think it says something that the title of this book is "M.G.M.'s Greatest Musicals", since the truly amazing thing is that one man was more or less responsible for all of them. Great behind-the-scenes stories.

If you have a choice, pick a different book

I bought this book for a finance class.

I took that class because it was a requirement for a degree, but I understood many of the principles before I ever cracked the book just from work/life experience. It's a good thing I did!

This text makes financial principles immensely more complicated than they need to be. The end of chapter questions relate to the chapters, but you often have to really work to see just how to apply what you've read to solving the problems. And each chapter has internet assignments, but many of them cannot be completed as written - the book tells you to gather information from one website or another, and those websites don't have the information available. One question even had me looking for a current financial statement for a particular company; not only could I not get the statement from the recommended site, I couldn't get it at all! That company had merged with another...and the merger took place before this edition was published, so there's absolutely no excuse.

If you have to buy this book for a class, you have my sympathies. If you don't...don't! There really is some good information hidden away in here, which is why it's not getting one star from me, but it's not worth the effort it takes to get to it.

Confusing

I used this book for an online self-study course in finance, so i was dependent on the book alone for clear explanations. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my hopes. I would think that I understood the text until I got to the questions at the end of the chapter which seemed to have little to do with what I'd just read. There has to be a better book on finance out there than this one!
