Good book for new endodontists

This is a good book to buy before setting up an office, especially if you want to be able to practice like Gary Carr. I have learned from sad experience that it is very important to have things set up initially so that you can accomplish treatment with the minimum amount of wasted movement. The first chapters of the book discuss how to set up the office effectively and how to work effectively with an assistant. The later chapters discuss how to handle various clinical issues that come up. Most of the people who buy this book probably already know how to do a root canal, so they do not discuss the simple cases, but things that come up less frequently, but that we will all see once in a while. The tips are very useful.

About the Author

Erving Goffman was Benjamin Franklin Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania until his death in 1982. He is recognized as one of the world’s foremost social theorists and much of his work still remains in print. Among his classic books are The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, Interaction Ritual, Stigma, Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity, and Frame Analysis.

William B. Helmreich is professor of sociology at CUNY Graduate Center and City College of New York and served as director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Queens College. He is author of eleven books, including The World of the Yeshiva: An Intimate Portrait of American Orthodoxy and Against All Odds: Holocaust Survivors and the Successful Lives They Made in America, which won the 1993 National Jewish Book Award.

A Little Classic of Sociology

I'm not a sociologist, a student of sociology or really, even that interested in sociology. I read about this book in David Orland's, Prisons: Houses of Darkness, where Orland often referred to Goffman's work in this book. I was not disappointed.
Goffman uses a mixture of field observation and references to literature to describe and critisize the theory and practice of the "Total Institution". As the reviewers note below, a "total institution" is an elastic concept. Goffman focuses on "strong" examples of T.I.'s: the mental hospital, prison, a 19th century man of war, monastery. Through these "strong" examples he fairly describes the concept and applies it well.
Less clear is the implications of Goffman's concept to those institutions which are either "weak" total institutions or non-total institutions with total institution tendencies. After reading this book, I saw aspects of "total" institutions in almost every institution I cared to think about: schools, churches, courts, etc.
I think it is fair to say that "All institutions dream of being total institutions." Therefore, this book has application beyond the world of "strong" total institutions. I recommend it highly.

Goffman's Asylums

This book can be challenging at times..You cant just read and put it down and expect to pick it back up again and know exactly what's going on. Goffman takes a very in depth look on the inmate situation focusing primarily on mental institutions. The personal stories of what these people go through and the things that Goffman witness while observing inmates really brings this book together. I think he focuses a lot on the development of the self when taken out of a familiar setting and placed into a new one. He talks about how to cope and what the staff does to help the inmates adapt to their new life. He can get wordy and redundant but all in all I think it is a rather good read. If you're in a social theory class or mental health student, I would recommend this book.

Anne Browning Walker, published author for the Huffington Post and Publishers Weekly, is a career writer and researcher who has turned her pen to fiction with her debut novel, The Booby Trap. The contemporary romance novel explores the impact of the assumptions made about others based on occupations or appearances. An avid reader of fiction, particularly romance, Anne set out to write a romance novel where the heroine reflected the many smart, savvy, thoughtful, and driven women she calls friends. After earning a B.A. in political science at Duke University (2004) and her M.A. in international affairs at George Washington University (2006), Walker joined the staff of Governor Deval Patrick of Mass. in the Legislative Affairs Office. As the Legislative Aide to the Governor, she was responsible for researching bills, drafting briefs, and working with state legislators. In 2009, Walker moved to Washington, DC to continue her research and writing for business, academic, political, and non-profit entities. Smart, sarcastic & intriguing

To paraphrase Thoreau, I would consider it a great compliment if you read this review and decide to buy The Booby Trap. I'm not a "chick-lit" kinda guy, but I found it very smart, sarcastic and intriguing. The story is a terrific mash-up of feminism, deception, and the breaking down of stereotypes. It also bridges the worlds of academia, Hooters, and on-line dating in a unique way. You know where it's all probably heading, but it's a fun journey getting there, and Browning Walker creates a few compelling twists you don't see coming. Loved the influences of Gloria Steinem and Henry David Thoreau. "Man up" or "Woman up" and give it a shot -- I absolutely predict you'll enjoy it.

Refreshing, smart read

I took a look at this book at the prodding of my wife. It's a terrific read, full of wit and humor and written without the cliches that plague romantic chick-lit fiction. I'm by no means an expert in the genre, but if more books read like this, I would certainly read romantic fiction more often. If you're on the fence about throwing down a few bucks to get this book -- don't hesitate. Get it and you won't be sorry.

Brilliant Chick-Lit, Brilliant Story

I received this book from Babs Chandrasoma at PRbytheBook in exchange for my honest review of it.
So the cover represents the book well, the red stillettos that Bambi has to wear whilst working at "The Booby Trap" The Booby Trap is a bar modeled along the same type of business as the "Hooters" chain of establishments. The women are the "typical bimbo" types with blonde hair, big boobs, with low cut tops and short skirts. These women give the men the impression that they want to see,"eye candy", "a dumb women to do their bidding who isn't so intelligent". Bambi manages to get the job at The Booby Trap from Joe one of her mums ex-boyfriends, to supplement her income whilst she is gaining her Ph.D. Bob was the one good guy her mum ever dated. Bambi's mum dated some real sleazy guys, guys that tried to take advantage of Bambi, though Bambi's mum preferred the sleazy guys and their stories than anything Bambi ever told her. thats just one reason why Bambi no longer has anything to do with her.
Bambi is at work as usual when "fate" steps in and she happens to meet Trip Whitley. Trip and his family own the extremely successful dating agency called Belle's and Beau's. Trip's father is in talks with a PR firm to come up with the next campaign to improve the business and they come up with the idea of Trip finding a woman to have an actual relationship with, rather than his usual love em and leave em one night stands.
Trip see's Bambi at The Booby Trap and see's a dumb blonde with low tops to match her low intelligence. Trip is of course presuming wrongly, very wrongly and Bambi just want to teach him a lesson he will never forget. Neither are truly looking for a relationship never mind love! So Trip offers to pay Bambi to pose as his steady girlfriend for the PR firm, and she reluctantly agrees as she desperately needs the money to fund a trip to a conference in London that would seriously help her with her Ph.D and future career.
So does the relationship stay a purely platonic business transaction, or is cupid at play as well as fate? Does Bambi teach Trip a valuable lesson? what does he think/do when he realizes that Bambi isn't just "a set of boobs, and high heels"? and why doesn't Bambi speak to her mother?
So did I enjoy the book? Yes, I really enjoyed it. I don't actually usually a lot of chick lit but I really liked this book. Would I recommend this book? Yes, and you don't necessarily have to be a big fan of chick lit to enjoy and appreciate this book. Would I read more by Anne Browning Walker. Would I read a Bk#2? If there was one, yes.

About the Author
Dorene s passion for nutrition and weight management (including understanding how our bodies work) sprang from her own struggles with weight, in her late teens and early twenties, when at times she weighed over 40 pounds more than she does today.
Through healthy eating and an active lifestyle she has maintained that weight loss for over 25 years. Dorene says that, There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone else become empowered to create their own success with their weight that s what I get excited about!
She knows it s tough though, especially with the enormous amount of misinformation being peddled to people looking for answers.
Fortunately for her readers Dorene likes to get to the bottom of threads of research to see what the data actually shows, and she has a knack for translating research into practical actionable advise. After hundreds of hours on Medline, and digging through the University of Washington Medical library stacks she s made herself an expert on evidence-based weight management research with a personal library of over 1,000 published research articles. She has particular expertise with 1) the metabolic literature related to the effects of dieting and exercise on basal metabolic rate and body composition; 2) appetite regulation; 3) exercise for weight loss and maintenance; 4) the effects of protein, carbohydrate and fat on energy balance; 5) weight loss misinformation and myths; etc., etc.!
Dorene has been a Registered Dietitian since 1993, and her focus has always been weight management. In addition to authoring The Healthy Eating & Weight Management Guide, some of her accomplishments since then include:
Managed one of the largest outpatient weight management programs in the Seattle area, personally working with hundreds of clients over a wide range of BMIs.
Providing training to nearly 2000 professionals who attended her accredited continuing education workshop (Advanced training in Weight Management, for health professionals working with weight loss) which was offered in 25 cities nationwide in 2003 and 2004.
Prior to taking her own training on the road in 2003:
Dorene had been a regularly featured presenter at fitness industry conventions in the US and Canada since 1997.
Taught weight management to nutrition and naturopathic medical students as part of her graduate coursework at Bastyr University.
Taught a weight management course at Lake Washington Technical College for students in the Fitness Specialist program.
Maintained a certification as a personal trainer for 15 years. She grew up in an athletic nature-loving family and remembers her father weight training three nights a week from the time that she was just four years old. Her father will be 76-years-old in August and is still going strong!
For the past ten years Dorene s fitness routine has consisted of yoga (three days a week) and aerobics or walking (a couple days a week). Recently, she s starting to get back into weight training, which had been a regular of her routine since her late twenties until she switched to yoga to rehab a chronic shoulder injury.

A Powerful Tool for Long Term Weight Loss

I highly recommend Dorene Robinson's updated The New Healthy Eating & Weight Management Guide and companion Workbook. We live in confusing world full of hyped up diets books and "health regimes" which offer big weight loss promises but little help in the area of real behavioral change that provides lasting results. As a cognitive weight loss expert I see new clients every day who have been dieting their whole lives who have no idea of the basic fundamentals of weight loss. These clients are intelligent, educated people who have lost their way in the foggy haze of fad diets and have succumbed to feeling the helplessness that comes when you give your power away to diet gurus but never really learn to shift yourself from within and become your own best weight loss coach.

Real weight mastery occurs when one makes the decision to truly change--this starts with one's mindset, understanding the true basics of how weight loss occurs, problem solving and preparing and keeping one's environment set up for success. In her latest version of The Healthy Eating & Weight Management Guide and companion Workbook Dorene has added much more information especially in the area of cognitive weight management--which of course being a cognitive weight loss expert and clinical hypnotherapist-- I was thrilled about. Doreen really addresses the need to change negative self talk as well as how to maneuver out of the "Wrong Thinking Track" habit into the "Right Thinking Track" habit. She also dives into the fundamentals of healthful eating, and leaves no stone unturned in enlightening the reader in the true physics of weight loss. This book is also beautiful, lots of pictures and color and is laid out in an easy to read and comprehend format that makes it easy to pick up and quickly find what you are looking for. The Workbook as well has many charts and exercises that are well laid out and easy to photocopy for use again and again.

I would highly recommend this book to any weight management professional and personal trainers to be on the top shelf of their resource library. I also think The Healthy Eating & Weight Management Guide and companion Workbook is the perfect beginning for anyone who is ready to really embark on a successful and lasting weight loss journey.

The last weight loss guide you'll ever need!

Using the National Weight Control Registry's "Masters of Weight Control" strategies that have helped over 10,000 people lose and keep off at least 20 pounds, she outlines 5 master skills and a choice of three distinct approaches for eating to successfully lose weight. It's not a cookie-cutter approach but rather helps each person find the method that works best for his or her lifestyle. The colorful tables, photos, checklists and graphics throughout the book make it easy to understand and apply the information. Straight forward and practical

This book is organized to make your weight loss efforts as simple as possible. Each chapter gives you clear guidance in making healthful choices, developing a productive attitude, being physically active and more. First learn why good nutrition matters, then learn how to use that knowledge to drop pounds. I especially like the workbook that comes in this 2-book set. It gives you the tools you need to plan your strategies, track your progress, record your food intake, estimate your calorie burn and other great tools. Most importantly, it's realistic and it will help you meet your goals!

Misrepresentation

the product advertised and product sent were 2 completely different things, the Complete 2009 Home Study Kit was in fact only a membership kit that when everything was done ended up costing me $40.00 out of my pocket (even with a partial refund). I believe Amazon should be more diligent to make sure the products advertised match what is being sent and if not a 100% not partial refund should be given.

A more lighthearted read from LaVey with his usual brand of wit and humor.

This book is more of a collection of the authors musings than his other works and certainly much lighter. You get to see more of LaVey's humorous side with his usual biting wit. The book discusses everything from the media, the occult, individualism, the Goodguy Badge, and even the importance of your own musings on the throne. Speaking of which, since the chapters are so short, it's actually a great bathroom companion. It's a fun book with some great insight, give it a shot.

This is my favourite Anton Lavey book aside from the Satanic Bible. In my opinion it's a little more coherent than Satan Speaks, and sometimes the author has a way of striking very familiar chords within the reader. You will have many of those "Yes, l always thought that too" moments. In The Devil's Notebook, LaVey actually prescribes his own version of a lycanthropic transformation which l love, being a werewolf myself.

You don't have to be a Satanist to enjoy the wit and wisdom of Church of Satan founder, the late Anton LaVey. This is a quick read and contains tidbits, quotes, and well-written essays about human social behavior and being one's own master. I have owned the print version for about 20 years and recently picked up the kindle version to read on my phone. It is organized in such a way that reading it in parts is very easy and fun. Of all of LaVey's works, this is my favorite. It lacks a lot of the jargon and mumbo jumbo found in the Satanic Bible, the Satanic Witch and others. Satan Speaks is a good companion of essays, but it isn't nearly as fun as this jewel.

About the Author
Peter Hawkes graduated from the University of Cambridge and subsequently obtained his PhD in the Electron Microscopy Section of the Cavendish Laboratory. He remained there for several years, working on electron optics and digital image processing before taking up a research position in the CNRS Laboratory of Electron Optics (now CEMES-CNRS) in Toulouse, of which he was Director in 1987. During the Cambridge years, he was a Research Fellow of Peterhouse and a Senior Research fellow of Churchill College. He has published extensively, both books and scientific journal articles, and is a member of the editorial boards of Ultramicroscopy and the Journal of Microscopy. He was the founder-president of the European Microscopy Society, CNRS Silver Medallist in 1983 and is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and of the Microscopy Society of America (Distinguished Scientist, Physics, 2015), Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and Honorary Member of the French Microscopy Society. In 1982, he was awarded the ScD degree by the University of Cambridge.
In 1982, he took over editorship of the Advances in Electronics & Electron Physics (now Advances in Imaging & Electron Physics) from Claire Marton (widow of the first editor, Bill Marton) and followed Marton's example in maintaining a wide range of subject matter. He added mathematical morphology to the topics regularly covered; Jean Serra and Gerhard Ritter are among those who have contributed.
In 1980, he joined Professor Wollnik (Giessen University) and Karl Brown (SLAC) in organising the first international conference on charged-particle optics, designed to bring together opticians from the worlds of electron optics, accelerator optics and spectrometer optics. This was so successful that similar meetings have been held at four-year intervals from 1986 to the present day. Peter Hawkes organised the 1990 meeting in Toulouse and has been a member of the organising committee of all the meetings. He has also participated in the organization of other microscopy-related congresses, notably EMAG in the UK and some of the European and International congresses on (electron) microscopy.
He is very interested in the history of optics and microscopy, and recently wrote long historical articles on the correction of electron lens aberrations, the first based on a lecture delivered at a meeting of the Royal Society. He likewise sponsored biographical articles for the Advances on such major figures as Ernst Ruska (Nobel Prize 1986), Helmut Ruska, Bodo von Borries, Jan Le Poole and Dennis Gabor (Nobel Prize, 1971). Two substantial volumes of the series were devoted to 'The Beginnings of Electron Microscopy' and 'The Growth of Electron Microscopy'. and others have covered 'Cold Field Emission Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy' and 'Aberration-corrected Electron Microscopy', with contributions by all the main personalities of the subject.
