Could be improved upon

While Dr. Weightman is clearly knowledgeable on the topic of Asian geography and history, there are numerous flaws with this text. First, and in my opinion most importantly, it is in terrible need of editing. There are typos in every chapter with words misspelled or places where one phrase was substituted for another but the original phrase was never removed. The text does not flow because information is often repeated in almost the same words directly after its first stating. Frankly, since the book is now on its third edition, I find these kinds of easily remedied mistakes inexcusable. Poor editing distracts from information and gives the appearance of incompetency no matter how much the writer actually knows. Second, Dr. Weightman is biased. Most chapters are spun in a way that is extremely feminist. Weightman often phrases things in a way so that even when men have things just as bad as women, it is still the women who are being oppressed. While I agree that women deserve better treatment than what they often receive in Asia, I do not think that tampering with the presentation of information to make their lives seem even worse is necessary. Third, Weightman's anecdotes about her travels in Asia are sometimes just distracting from the text. I enjoy the little stories, but they need to be presented in a different fashion that does not distract one from the information that is being presented.

I would like to see this text further edited and then I would be able to give more credit to the author for her work. As it stands right now I am too distracted by flaws to appreciate the information.

This is an excellent book. The charts and graphs are excellent. The author has obviously had a lot of experience in teaching the subject, as words are not wasted. I have seldom seen a textbook that is as well organized, presented with such a variety of formats, and so much fun to read. I often wish I had an eBook version in addition, so I could search for words and phrases (for school assignments), but I would not give up my hard copy, which is now "defaced" by scribblings, yellow-highlights, margin notes, etc. I hated geography in the eighth grade, but I like this book!

Intimacy's Joys and Challenges

This book is a treasure, one that I will return to over time as Life's different lessons surface to challenge me. The authors present the many questions that arise from relationships beautifully, grounding them in the necessary but often-belittled work we must do on ourselves, alone as well as with another. Viewing the relationship entity itself as a third partner, the Beloved, helps in recognizing that we each interact not only with our partner, but also with the energy of partnership as though it were an individual. The chapters can be read either sequentially or separately as their specific energies are needed. In fact, I think the stand-alone nature of the chapters makes the book particularly useful. The meditations also work well whether you do them progressively or return to them as you feel the need for a specific meditation's strengths.
Most importantly, the book focuses on the importance of consciousness at all levels of relationship. The authors manage to make the book germane whether or not the reader is engaged in a relationship at the moment. Those who are in a relationship can use the book to deepen their bond and understand one another. Those leaving a relationship can use it to learn and heal. Anyone can benefit from the familiarity that comes from consciously examining their relationship persona and its impact on interactions with others.
Especially poignant is the chapter on conscious closure of relationship, providing insight and great support when saying goodbye to loved ones, whether the parting occurs through death or a decision to go separate ways. Understanding the importance of forgiveness and the role of ritual in taking affirmative steps towards making peace with partings is empowering. The authors gently address the pain of closure, and provide concrete examples that can help to ease the hurt while opening yourself up to the new beginning birthed by every goodbye.

Given the ever-increasing speed and memory size available to computer scientists, Moravec, who founded Carnegie Mellon's major robotics program, predicts that artificial intelligence will exceed human intelligence by 2050. He argues further that it is only a matter of time before we have computer simulations that will substitute for human functionality. (Yes, robots will take over the work force, but ultimately humans will benefit from a fully automated economy.) Moravec considers the various arguments, philosophical and otherwise, that have been made regarding whether computers can "think" and devotes a fair amount of coverage to questions Turing raised 50 years ago. His comparison of libraries to knowledge bases is simplistic?apparently, Moravec doesn't see any intellectual component to cataloging?but overall his interpretations are imaginative and his arguments interesting if not always convincing. Automation and quality of life

The best book on the future of robotics and automation! However, Hans believes robots are our wonderful mind children and should grow into powerful machines that evolve quickly past us. He is then horrified that some humans may transform themselves into machines and become very dangerous. Why won't his mind children be just as dangerous or more dangerous? At least a mind-transferred human might seek pleasure and fun. While Hans' logical AI robots make their galactic invasion plans!

Why not engineer automation to its pleasure giving limits? Instead of giving robots a high quality of life, design automation to increase EVERYONE quality of life and wealth on Earth???

Fantastic and imaginary!
This has a stodgy slow start covering the early years of robotics. But after this the book goes off with a bang. The self professed psychics fundamentalist expands a potential robotic future from basic principles. A thoroughly enlightening read.

This work is interesting enough for its history. Completed in 1940, Long Day's Journey Into Night is an autobiographical play Eugene O'Neill wrote that--because of the highly personal writing about his family--was not to be released until 25 years after his death, which occurred in 1953. But since O'Neill's immediate family had died in the early 1920s, his wife allowed publication of the play in 1956. Besides the history alone, the play is fascinating in its own right. It tells of the "Tyrones"--a fictional name for what is clearly the O'Neills. Theirs is not a happy tale: The youngest son (Edmond) is sent to a sanitarium to recover from tuberculosis; he despises his father for sending him; his mother is wrecked by narcotics; and his older brother by drink. In real-life these factors conspired to turn O'Neill into who he was--a tormented individual and a brilliant playwright.

stage directions personified

I have seen the play and enjoyed it. I will see it again soon but this time I wanted to be more 'ahead of the game' so I read it before seeing it. What a difference. I so look forward to seeing it now. It is tragic but there is so much more to the book than just the dialogue. O'Neill has unbelievable stage directions and this does so much in helping to understand all 4 of these pathetic characters. There are so many emotions on display and simple things like smoothing her hair (nervous reaction) or shedding a tear (love or sympathy) helped me to understand. It is amazing this all takes place in less than 24 hours. I could visualize everything on stage from the set to the individual characters. Some of the dialogue is dated, but the story is still contemporary and powerful. O'Neill is a genius and he deserves the praise and awards he received.

Dependency, co- and otherwise…

Eugene O’Neill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936, and won several Pulitzer Prizes for Drama. “Long Day’s Journey…” is generally considered his magnum opus. It was first performed in 1956, three years after his death. For this Kindle edition, with the all-too-appropriate cover, there is an introduction by Harold Bloom, one of the many of this genre that might be easily skipped. Bloom is unequivocal in his praise: “Long Day’s Journey must be the best play in our more than two centuries as a nation.” Bloom performs a tour-de-force of brief comparisons between O’Neill and most other celebrated writers. Warning! If you decide to plod through the intro, you may enjoy the following insights: “O’Neill seems a strange instance of the Aestheticism of Rossetti and Pater, but his metaphysical nihilism, desperate faith in art and phantasmagoric naturalism stem directly from them.”

As for the play itself, there are only five characters: James Tyrone, 65, an accomplished actor, his wife Mary, 54, stricken with rheumatism, their son James, 33 a ne’er-do-well, still searching for his place in the world, and the younger son, Edmund, 23, who is not in good health, along with an Irish servant girl, Cathleen. The entire play occurs on one day, in August, 1912, at the Tyrone’s summer house (and only house), somewhere along the New England coast.

Although the play is set in time more than a century ago, the central theme could be ripped from today’s headlines concerning opioid abuse and addiction. Mary got “hooked” on morphine, prescribed to her by a doctor after the death of her second son. She continues to seek its solace, since, as she says: “It hides you from the world and the world from you. You feel that everything has changed, and nothing is what it seemed to be. No one can find or touch you anymore.” Denial is the addict’s crutch, as Mary proclaims: “Now I have to lie, especially to myself.” But she is not the only one in denial – at one level or another, all the males in the family skirt around the issue of their wife’s / mother’s dependency problems – it is just a little medicine for her rheumatism.

And the men have their own “dependency problem”: alcohol! It is a dependency that has always been more open, and socially acceptable. I had to chuckle at one part of the play – both my son, and I, when I was my son’s age, had roommates who had alcohol dependency problems, and would drink our liquor, and then add water to the bottle so that the level of alcohol would appear to be the same. This technique played out prominently in the play, with the father James knowing that the sons did this.

No question that it is a well-written and structured play. O’Neill utilizes flashbacks to provide scenes from James and Mary’s courtship and marriage. Mary had two youthful dreams: to be a nun or a concert pianist – the latter now impossible with her rheumatic fingers. Money issues have continued to be a major issue in their lives. The author has helped push me to finally read Baudelaire since O’Neill has the younger son, Edmund, quote him (to the annoyance of the others) on several occasions (“the vulgar herd can never understand”).

It is a depressing play, about an unfortunately depressing and familiar subject. The reader – or at least this one – wants to shake any one of the characters, and say simply: “Get on with your life – there are a lot of roses that still need to be smelt.” I know that is a prime reason I would never re-read this play, and have been tempted to give it only four stars, yet that rating is simply too subjective. O’Neill has written a great, 5-star, timeless play.

An amazing addition to any collection of architectural monographs

This book is a masterwork and a very worthy addition to any library/collection of architectural monographs. Amazingly well written and supported by actual floor plans and first rate pictures. Do not hesitate to make this purchase is an investment. Further, the firm of Ike Kligerman Barkley is top tier and this publication pays homage to the caliber of the firm. Well done at every level by all involved.

The New Shingled House is not just about the timeless elegance of shingled houses and the creation of them, but also about an ease and luxury in living.

The photographs in this book are just spectacular. Shingles are just beautiful anyway but the reinterpretation to modern living as well as the staunchly traditional styles are all represented in this book.

14 houses are shown in this book. Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects (IKBA) is an architecture firm based in New York providing high-end residential design. The house’s photographs are accompanied by an essay written by the architect describing the process of creating the houses. The essays are beautiful. The pictures are beautiful. The houses are beautiful.

A Treasure

This book is a treasure. "Place Names of Hawaii" is an exceptional and important reference book for anyone who is interested in the Hawaiian language or anyone who just wants to know the meaning behind the names of streets, towns, valleys, land sections, fish ponds, craters, mountains, streams, islands, churches, buildings, et cetera. Every entry has an English translation of the Hawaiian name (when possible) as well as background information. It is invaluable reference book for any Hawaiian language student, but "Place Names" should also be in the library or book collection of everyone who lives in Hawai'i that has a library or book collection.

Place Names of Hawaii, and Supplement to the Third Edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary. was the 1966 first edition, it had about 1,125 entries and was described as a "Supplement to the Third Edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary. The Hawaiian Dictionary: Hawaiian-English, English-Hawaiian is perhaps the most important reference book on the Hawaiian language and "Place Names" is a product of the same team of Pukui/Elbert. This is the "revised and expanded edition" with about 4,000 entries. It should also be considered a supplement to the UH Hawaiian Dictionary, although it is also a stand alone reference and can be used and enjoyed all by itself.

The revised and expanded edition of "Place Names" has been available for more than 30 years. I can not understand how it is that I am the first to write a review for Amazon; considering how important this book is to Hawaii and its language. If you like this book, I also suggest Hawaiian Street Names: The Complete Guide to Oahu Street Names. It lists many streets that are not listed in "Place Names". Make sure you get the updated edition.

The Hawaiian language lives, not only in its spoken language, books, songs and chants, but also in its place names. I live on O'ahu and find it curious and confounding that many people who live here have no understanding, curiosity or appreciation about the place names that they deal with every day, like the street they live on or the town they live in. Many residents do not correctly pronounce O'ahu or Honolulu. The island is not "Awahu" nor is it the city of "Hanalulu" or "Hanolulu". Get this book so that you can learn and understand what those Hawaiian place names mean and help keep Hawaii a special and beautiful place.
