Good for the novice

We utilized this text for a graduate level course. I found it to be well worded and a good introductory text. I do not have much experience with other books on this subject, so it is hard to make fair comparisons. The authors are competent in describing the lessons and present seemingly plausible case scenarios.

Dialogue in Defense of a Virtuous Life

Reading Plato is excellent introduction to philosophy, and reading Gorgias is an excellent introduction to Plato. His explicit purpose here is to question orators (i.e. politicians, in modern parlance) who resort to "flattery" rather than reality to advance their aims, and to contrast their lifestyles with those of truth-seeking philosophers. Socrates (always the protagonist in Plato's dialogues) ultimately defends the seemingly radical stance that it is better even to suffer and die at the hands of an unjust person than to commit an injustice oneself. Plato's dialogues are brilliant because they outline arguments in ways both easy to read and to understand, so even those who have never formally delved into discourse will find this book both illustrative and entertaining. The translation is usually both clear and clever; Socrates's sharp wit shines through, and archaic references are dutifully explained in footnotes.

As analytic philosophy, Socrates' argument is not watertight. Most skeptics will be thoroughly unconvinced by his arguments from analogy (i.e., judges inflict punishment to heal the soul just as doctors inflict pain to heal the body, p. 49) and his tacit reliance on an afterlife (pp. 107-113) to defend law over an anarchistic free-for-all. However, Socrates's great ability is refusing to leave customs and habits unquestioned, opening the door for further exploration and inquiry. Reading this dialogue will guide you--perhaps even excite you--to thinking critically about the extent to which we should pursue selfish aims, even if we do not seem to suffer consequences from them.

Even if--or especially if--you think of philosophy as a dry and dusty discipline, you owe it to yourself to read Gorgias. Perhaps you may even be convinced that, as Socrates argues, it is not only possible but essential to incorporate philosophical inquiry into the decisions you make throughout your life.

What an absolute classic. You are taken back in time and brought through the thoughts and the patterns of Socrates. As one of the greatest thinkers the reading of the dialog can help any person bring more understanding and clarity to world we live in today. Although the book takes place over 2, 400 years ago the situation are still very modern and the morals and theories developed are still very current.

The book is a very easy short read that reads similar to a play. Can be conversed with two or more readers for added element and fun.

Often school will recommend this book for classes, but I also recommend this book for any other individuals just looking to understand better the grips of reality through decision making and the parallels that we face in moral situations through sales and other events in life.

About the Author
Gilbert J. Gorski is a licensed architect and the project designer for numerous buildings including the World Headquarters for the McDonald's Corporation in Oak Brook, IL, and the Oceanarium, a major addition to the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. In 1987 he was designated the Burnham Fellow by the Chicago Architectural Club and was awarded an associate fellowship to the American Academy in Rome. Since 1989 Gorski has headed his own firm specializing in design and illustration. His drawings and paintings have been included in numerous publications and exhibits on architecture and illustration. He was twice awarded the Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize, the nation's highest singular honor in architectural illustration, by the American Society of Architectural Illustrators. He is also the recipient of an Institute Honor for Collaborative Achievement, awarded by the American Institute of Architects. He presently is an associate professor at the University of Notre Dame and holds the James A. and Louise F. Nolen Chair in Architecture.

James E. Packer is Emeritus Professor of Classics at Northwestern University. He is the author of the three-volume The Forum of Trajan in Rome (1997); of numerous articles in journals, including the American Journal of Archaeology, the Journal of Roman Archaeology, the Bullettino della Commissione Archeologica Comunale di Roma, the Maryland Historian, Natural History, Croniche Pompeiane, Technology and Culture, Curator, Inland Architect, Archeo, and Archaeology; and of articles in collections, including the Lexicon Topographicum Urbis Romae (1993-2000). He is the recipient of many grants, including those from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the Getty Grant Program, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. He has excavated at Pompeii, in the Forum of Trajan (Rome), and in the Theater of Pompey (Rome). 'The Forum of Trajan' exhibition at the opening of the new Getty Museum in Los Angeles (1997) was based on Packer's work.

awesome book!!

As an architectural historian who has studied Roman architecture his whole life and consequently knew more than the guides at the Roman Forum, particularly, I can confidently say this magnificent book in every way has exceeded my expectations. No other book has remotely compared with this definitive study in regards to scholarship and artistry. The illustrations are incredibly realistic ,almost photographic in their details. Plans, elevations and sections of each building reflect the latest findings with respect to archaeology and research. Heretofore I have never before seen in countless books an alternative restoration of the arcaded facade of the Basilica Julia, with a second story terrace, in addition to its "usual" depiction without the terrace. Because there is no conclusive evidence, I appreciated the authors illustrating both possible elevations, a remarkable first, in my opinion. Quite frankly, I believe that any and all learned institutions and anyone interested in art history or Roman architeture should unquestionably have this book to enjoy.

This gorgeous book has been well worth the wait. It has a comprehensive overview of the forum and well as individual histories of all the monuments. The 3-dimensional computer graphics views are detailed and help envision the forum as it might have been. more fun than getting drunk before work and sleeping on the toilet

I can't express how funny this book is. It satirizes that 95% of the world that makes your life more miserable with each passing minute. The breakup scene beginning on page 172 makes me so happy that I want to hang it on my wall. His ex-girlfriend tries to hurt him with shallow pop psychology insults and he mocks her so slyly and satisfyingly that I cheered. Every page contains multiple out loud laughs.

It's a difficult book to describe but an easy one to read and enjoy.

Great Debut

I thought this book was ridiculously funny. Originally, I only bought this because Max Barry said to (I'm a sucker for a great marketing scheme), but I have been euphoric to find that this was a smart and funny story that had me crying from laughing so hard. Quite possibly one of the funniest books I have read today.

Diffusers: in-depth discussion

This book is more concentrated on diffusers than absorbers, with extensive care on Schroeder diffusers. Also it is more concentrated on acoustical physics than the discussion on various acoustic materials.

Some peoples (like me) may find the chapter "Measurement of Absorber properties" exceptionally useful.

To illustrate my point: you cannot find the terms "anechoic chamber" in the index.

In this readable synthesis of scholarship, University of Delaware history professor Kolchin takes a judicious view of historians' controversies surrounding this topic. Kolchin ( Unfree Labor: American Slavery and Russian Serfdom ) offers a good narrative account of American slavery, but the book is most useful for his historiographical navigation. While some scholars have argued that slaves quickly abandoned African ways, and others maintain that slave culture was strongly African, Kolchin disputes this dichotomy, describing instead the development of a unique African American culture. Likewise, Kolchin sees the validity of studies that have focused on slaves as victims as well as more recent work emphasizing their resiliency. With perspective drawn from his research into the end of slavery in other countries, Kolchin stresses that Reconstruction, once seen by scholars as cruel to Southern whites and more recently as insufficiently revolutionary, was in fact "an extraordinary departure" that took control of the mechanics of emancipation away from the former masters.

In a lively interpretive history, Kolchin (History/Univ. of Delaware) succinctly traces America's institution of slavery from its Colonial beginnings to the Reconstruction era. American slavery, Kolchin explains, didn't develop in isolation but evolved as part of a trend toward forced labor in the New World colonies, especially in the Caribbean and Brazil. In Colonial America, ``the initial demand for labor was precisely that--for labor--and was largely color-blind.'' Most forced laborers were indentured servants from Great Britain; although some slavery existed as early as the founding, in the early 17th century, of the Virginia colony, not until that century's close were Africans imported in large numbers as slaves. Kolchin reveals that, while the plantation slavery of what was to become the South developed distinctively (and primarily to cultivate tobacco and cotton), it had much in common with the plantation slavery of the Caribbean (where sugar was the primary crop). By about 1770, American slavery was concentrated mostly in the South, though it existed in all of the American colonies, and, as time passed, relationships between slaves and masters changed as second- generation slaves lost much of their African culture and became Americanized. In the US--in contrast to the Caribbean--slaves lived longer, developed considerable occupational diversity, and became acculturated, particularly in their absorption of Protestantism. The Revolutionary era saw slavery threatened by Enlightenment ideology, but the institution survived more strongly than ever in the South and, during the 19th century, came to be perceived as fundamental to the Southern economy and way of life. Kolchin writes about slave life through the Civil War, and, not surprisingly, he sees slavery as leaving a legacy that has persisted throughout our own century. Kolchin offers his book as a concise, readable synthesis of the movements in the historiography of slavery in the United States. Influenced by the movement toward social and cultural history, he devotes considerable attention to slave life in the antebellum south and the effects of the particular situation of slavery in the United States in shaping slave culture. Kolchin also situates slavery in the U.S. in the context of the world wide institution with comparisons to the Caribbean, Brazil, and to the Russian serfs which both highlights the unique situation of American Slaves and emphasizes that the institution of slavery did not exist in a vacuum.
The book progresses chronologically from the 1619 arrival of slaves in Jamestown to a brief discussion of the end of slavery and the problems of reconstruction, with thematic treatments of slave life, white control and paternalism in antebellum slavery as well as white society, economy, and ideology in the American south.
In producing such a smooth synthesis, Kolchin admittedly sacrifices a certain amount of detail and nuance for the sake of flow and clarity. Disconcerting, at times is his lack of documentation, another victim of simplicity in Kolchin's approach. While accomplishing his goal of remaining clear and readable, the reader sometimes wishes for some assistance in discerning the origin or fuller development of a particular position or point. To his credit, Kolchin works references to the historiography into his text well, and he provides an exceedingly thorough bibliographical essay at the end, which is probably the strongest segment of the work. Still, the lack of documentation sometimes proves frustrating and thus counters the goal of smooth flow in the text.
In the final analysis, however, Kolchin produces an excellent, readable volume that accomplishes his goal of a balanced narrative that shows how slavery evolved over time in the United States. So too has it accomplished its purpose in enlightening beginners and enkindling much scholarly discussion.

Excellent History of Slavery in the USA

Over the past 50 years, the study of slavery has been one of the most dynamic and contentious areas in American History. A large volume of first-rate scholarship now exists on many aspects of North American slavery. This excellent book is a successful effort to synthesize the large volume of information on North American slavery. The book is organized chronologically, beginning with the Colonial period and progressing through the Revolution and the Antebellum period. Kolchin does an excellent job of describing the historical evolution of slavery in the USA. Another meritorious aspect is that Kolchin is an expert on the comparative history of slavery and provides useful comparative perspectives by comparing North American slavery with the features of other unfree societies. Kolchin is a clear writer and the book is very well organized. There is an excellent annotated bibliography which is a fine guide for readers interested in more specialized works on this topic. This is a must read for anyone interested in American History.
