About the Author
Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Before retiring, Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years, where he honed an approach to teaching and writing that forms the foundation for his textbooks. Mike has been writing for over 35 years and currently has fifteen books in print. His books have been awarded both Texty and McGuffey awards from TAA.

Mike is a member of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America and the Text and Academic Authors Association, and received the TAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. His influence in the field of mathematics extends to his four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for a college textbook publishing company; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

Kathleen Miranda, Ed.D from St. John's University, is an Emeritus Associate Professor of the State University of New York (SUNY) where she taught for 25 years. Kathleen is a recipient of the prestigious New York State Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and particularly enjoys teaching mathematics to underprepared and fearful students.� In addition to her extensive classroom experience, Kathleen has worked an accuracy reviewer and solutions author on several mathematics textbooks, including Michael Sullivan’s Brief Calculus and Finite Mathematics. Kathleen’s goal is to help students unlock the complexities of calculus and appreciate its many applications.

Kathleen has four children: Edward, a plastic surgeon in San Francisco, James, an emergency medicine physician in Philadelphia, Kathleen, a chemical engineer, working on vaccines, and Michael, a management consultant specializing in corporate strategy.

More than a read - it is inspirational

Great inspirational read for young people interested in history -- book included in our community's give-away of books at our library conducted in conjunction with the Detroit Lakes, MN rededication of the Grand Army of the Republic Park, 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War and the death of President Lincoln. In Becker County, about 364 residents served in the Civil War including three females, one was a doctor and two were nurses so this Time publication has extra meaning.

I found the title ironic

I generally don't review books I didn't really like but then I realised that I appreciate it when others are honest about what they thought about what they read.

I found it extremely difficult to get through this book - normally I love to lose myself in books, love getting caught up in the story. That did not happen in this book - I felt that the characters were kind of boring, they really didn't have much in the way of personality, plus there was no chemistry and certainly no ignition between them. I also felt that the storyline was vastly lacking in any depth - I really didn't care what happened in the book.

I wouldn't recommend this book and I won't be reading any other books by this author. But that's just my opinion.

I'm a big Kaylea Cross fan and have read all her books. I even gave her 5* for one book I read some time ago - believe me a rare thing for me to do. However, this time I'm not that happy.

Usually Cross divides her plot perfectly between suspense/military part and romance part. However, this book developed too slowly. The first half of the book was devoted to the main characters' insecurities, fears and military actions in connection with the book. More specifically, Khalia and Hunter feel an attraction towards each other right from the first time they meet but it took them nearly half the book to decide how or who would make the first step. Basically there isn't anything wrong with that, especially if the author uses this time to prepare and introduce further developments smoothly and properly. However, this didn't happen in this case. The developments of the plot were presented as if a switch was flipped.

Khalia and Hunter were likeable main characters. However, the background information on them wasn't enough to let them appear in the mind's eye and whatever bits and pieces of info were given about them appeared as if they were presented in a report, which just reinforced the impression that this book was a bit rushed.

Needless to say that I would've appreciated a better and longer sneak peak at the couple back in the States. I would also have appreciated to find out what happened with Hunter and the job development that was shortly hinted at. And believe me - the list with what I wanted and expected from this book could go on and on.

All over not a bad book but in no case and by no means up to Cross' usual standard.

Fantastic romantic suspense

This is a great military romantic suspense story. I think it's hard to pull off the realism of such a gritty theme, but Kaylea Cross does it well. Khalia's father died at the hands of radical militants so after his death she takes over the non-profit group he had started in Pakistan to help with the education of girls. She's nervous about going there and I liked that aspect of her personality. She's a realistic character who understands that her life will be in danger when she goes to Pakistan. Yet, she does it anyway. To me, that's what makes her brave. When she gets there she meets Hunter, leader of the Titanium Security group who will be protecting her. They get off to a rocky start because of some issues she has but that's short lived and the chemistry between them is scorching.

Hunter isn't exactly thrilled about being leader of her protective detail, especially after she questions whether he was actually a SEAL or not. But he and his team do their job and before he knows it, she's completely gotten under his skin. Neither of them want to feel the intense attraction but it's there and they both have to face it.

While she's at the girl's school her foundation is supporting, they're attacked and from there the action is non-stop. Trying to outrun, outmaneuver and outthink the militants who are determined to see her dead makes this an awesome romantic suspense. There were some twists and turns I didn't see coming and the romance was scorching but still sweet. Hunter is such an alpha hero, but not an alpha jerk. I really loved his character and the way he interacted with Khalia. And I can't wait to see the rest of the Titanium Security guys get their own story.

If you've read Kaylea Cross before you won't be disappointed. And if you haven't, this is a perfect example of what romantic suspense should be like. It's realistic and gritty, but the romance and suspense blended perfectly together making this book impossible to put down.

Patricia A. Ireland, CMT, AHDI-F, has worked as a medical transcriptionist since 1968 and has been an instructor of medical terminology and medical transcription for over thirty years--teaching in house and now on line since 2000. A certified medical transcriptionist since 1981, Ms. Ireland has worked in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, and doctor's offices, as well as two years overseas in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia plus 1-1/2 years in Kingston, Jamaica. Ms. Ireland currently lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her cats where she is a part-time instructor for the on-line division of Mildred Elley. She is an active member of her professional association, the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) as well as the Capital Chapter of AHDI in Austin.

Mary Ann Novak, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor for the Information Management Systems and College of Applied Sciences and Arts in the Southern Illinois University. She is a member of Delta Pi Epsilon and Phi Delta Kappa.

This series keeps me clamoring for more.

While this was not my favorite of the series so far - if you love high school drama with a few zombies thrown in - this series is for you. Megan Berry is up to her old tricks of doing things her way; Ethan is driving her (and this reader) NUTS!!; Monicster keeps getting in the way. We will have to wait until Book 4 to find out what is going to happen at Homecoming. Who knows?!?

Well that low down dirty Monica.....I am hooked to this story and can't put it down. I am gonna not be very happy with Ethan if he is involved with this mess....lol. I hope Meg gets to the bottom of this and fast and I can't wait to find out what is going on. Love this series so far it's a must read!!

Grade 1-3-The ocean is a playground, a traffic jam, a secret hideout, and more in the 10 rhymed scenarios in this underwater tour. Each quatrain is set in white type on one page of a photographic spread. "The ocean is-/A STAGE" where "These dolphins dance and leap above/Their watery arena,/Performing like a graceful pair/Of long-nosed ballerinas." The leaping dolphins are silhouetted against an orange-suffused, darkened sky, but most views feature animals and plants beneath the waves as starfish, a toothy shark, and flowery sponges appear in turn. A small note on the verso of the title page names the pictured species. Though the book has the appearance of simple nonfiction, no other information is added, and the colorful scenes have no particular order or relationship to one another. Touches of humor soften the repetitive rhythm, and the handsome photographs offer intriguing glimpses into the watery world. Teachers might find the imagery and the album format a pleasant means of introducing discussions of ocean life.

He has taken photos in nearly every conceivable underwater locale and is the recipient of National Science Foundation Artists and Writers Grants and a Pew Marine Conservation Fellowship, the world’s only prize dedicated to marine conservation. Bottom line information on achieving emotional stablility with vitamins.

This book is a must for anyone with mental health issues in their family, ranging from fluctuating emotions to schizophrenia. It re-enforced, for me, that without the treatment that was given to my schizoid sister back in the 60's, her life would have been a travesty. As it is, she recovered, became first an LPN and later an RN and worked as a nurse until she was 75.

About the Author
Iris Murdoch was born in Dublin in 1919. She read Classics at Somerville College, Oxford, and after working in the Treasury and abroad, was awarded a research studentship in philosophy at Newnham College, Cambridge. In 1948 she returned to Oxford as fellow and tutor at St Anne's College and later taught at the Royal College of Art. Until her death in 1999, she lived in Oxford with her husband, the academic and critic, John Bayley. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1987 and in the 1997 PEN Awards received the Gold Pen for Distinguished Service to Literature. Iris Murdoch made her writing debut in 1954 with Under the Net. Her twenty-six novels include the Booker prize-winning The Sea, The Sea (1978), the James Tait Black Memorial prize-winning The Black Prince (1973) and the Whitbread prize-winning The Sacred and Profane Love Machine (1974). Her philosophy includes Sartre: Romantic Rationalist (1953) and Metaphysics as a Guide to Morals (1992); other philosophical writings, including The Sovereignty of Good (1970), are collected in Existentialists and Mystics (1997).

Will you like this book?

Even though I gave this five stars, that does not mean that everyone will like this book.

You are more likely to enjoy this book if you can enjoy a book with long, wandering descriptions, stream of consciousness such as Ulysses, or a meandering through someone else's life,. . I think that older people will understand the book better than younger people.

If you need a plot, excitement, or need to understand what is going on at all times, this is not the book for you.

I had to interrupt my reading of this book several times. I read it on Kindle and highlighted, not the great passages, but items that seemed significant in terms of understanding the characters and what was going on. In fact, after reading about 100 pages, I went back and skimmed/highlighted. This was helpful, especially since my reading was interrupted. I read the last 10% after a break of almost 5 months and was able to pick right up on the story. It seems that this would be a good way to read the book: read a bit and put it aside, then go back and read a bit more, or flip through the earlier parts and re read. If you are the type of person who thinks about life, and meaning, then you will enjoy this. I don't think I would have enjoyed this when I was younger, although, who knows? I have gone back and read many books that I read in my 20s and they seem to be different books. Maybe this book would be the same: one book for a young person and another for an older person. If a young person can get through it, it might be very educational and even helpful- not as a moral guide, but to put perspective on one's own life as it is lived.

I'm going to make a stab at saying what this book is about. There are several summaries of the "plot". The interesting thing is that many of them vary except in the basic outlines. That is because one's reaction to this book is going to vary according to the level at which one reads it. I have only a superficial acquaintance with philosophy or mythology and several other areas of knowledge. I sense that there are many levels of understanding this book and no one will have access to all of them. What I do have is a broad experience of life, so that is what I was able to understand in this book.

What I think is going on here is that Charles is talking about parts of his life, with an emphasis on his obsession with Hartley, a woman whom he loved as a young man, and whom he may still love. That is the superficial story. Meanwhile, other people come and go in his life. Many of them are also obsessed, often with him. Sometimes they are obsessed with other aspects of life: the theater, Buddhism, patriotism. Each time they come into his life, he thinks differently about them and often they are thinking differently about him. Unlike many novels, in this book, many of the "minor" characters have a character arc. The the arc is not like one that is satisfying in a Hollywood movie, it is an arc that is more closely aligned with the arc of one's life. It can be satisfying, or surprising, or stupid.

As different things happen in his life, he reflects upon his relationship with Hartley differently,which serves to inform us,not so much about Hartley, as about the lead character and his own development. In the same way, the sea is not an objective inanimate object, but Charles' relationship with the sea reflects his mood and his thoughts. Charles also has many relationships with others. They start out at one point and continue to grow and develop in their own, separate lives. As they develop, they relate to him differently and he also changes his opinion about them, sometimes based on a re-thinking of past events, and sometimes in reaction to changes in that person. In the end, perhaps there is an answer, or perhaps it is random and doesn't make a neat story-like life.

Nabokov once said something along the lines of that one needs to read a novel at least twice to truly understand it. This is one of the books that will bear re-reading and will probably give gifts on a second, third, or even fifth reading. It is great literature, and a great experience, but not for everyone.

The Writing Carries the Story

Aside from the story, which takes a while to pick up steam, I became attached to the book for the quality of the writing. It is nearly 500 pages, and Iris Murdoch describes the sea throughout, never repeating the descriptions. I actually lost the book when I was about 100 pages into the story, and I bought another copy rather than starting up one of the numerous novels waiting to be read on my shelf. Murdoch so overshadows most writers that it took me a while before I could begin another novel. I just savored the language and her way or forming sentences and imagery for a couple of weeks. I think really good writing deserves that, the way really finely prepared food or wine deserves to be savored.

Iris Murdoch was my favourite author of the '70s

Iris Murdoch was my favourite author of the '70s. I decided to reread some of her works and have started with "The Sea The Sea".
Often when one rereads a book they read earlier in their lives, one is disappointed. However, that was not the case here.
Her erudition is next to none, but her writing flows easily. Her characters seem larger than life, but, on reflection, they are really the same people we have around us, and of course even ourselves. Through these characters, she examines the human condition with amazing plots and twists and turns. Still one of my very favourite authors. I always feel sorry when one of her books end, and live with it for days after.

Erin Healy creates an amazing, intricate story in The Baker's Wife. Audrey and her husband Geoff's world is turned upside down when an their church fires Geoff, the pastor. Dealing with the shame of a personal scandal, trying to hold their family together, moving, and starting a new business, Audrey and Geoff are hanging on by a thread. Life gets even more difficult when Audrey is involved in an accident and the body of the other driver can't be found. The victim's husband - a detective and elder at their former church - comes to their bakery and declares he will hold everyone hostage until Audrey can produce his wife's body. Audrey must rely on a troubled teen and a woman recently released from prison to help her find the victim before her husband and son die.

To say that the plot is detailed is an understatement. However, Healy tells the story in such a way that it kept me flipping pages furiously. The characters are amazingly well-developed. Each character really seems like a real person - with flaws, problems, hopes, dreams. As the drama builds and the pieces fall into place, readers will feel a wide range of emotions as they learn more about each character.

While the story was incredible, there was one thing that I wasn't quite sure how to deal with. Audrey gets these "feelings" and sometimes actual injuries that mimic those of other people. She feels that these are used by God to show her who she should be ministering to. I love the thought of being really in-tune with God and the ministry she has with her bread baking. However, it felt kind of strange in a Christian book. I wasn't sure if these feelings/injuries were psychic-type visions or prophecy or what. I probably wouldn't have felt so strange about it if it was in a secular book. As it is, I just wasn't sure what to think.

Overall, though, I really did enjoy the book and will gladly read another book by Erin Healy.

As I began reading the first several chapters I found myself wondering if I even wanted to continue with the story, the overuse of adjectives was a little much to say the least. However, I did find myself intrigued by the mystery. This story has an odd mix of genres; Christian fiction, Mystery, Paranormal, Romance. What?....Yes, that was my thought exactly. It felt as though the author was trying to cram everything into this one novel and the paranormal aspect was just a little to far fetched.

To be fair, there were a lot of faith based issues that were covered and would make for a great book club discussion; sin, righteousness, abortion, emotional abuse, love, God's forgiveness and unconditional love. I did like the mystery/suspense to the story and continued turning the page for that alone.

All in all it was just okay for me. Oh well, back to my library shelf.

Christian Fiction Suspense with a Wee Bit of Paranormal Thrown In

Not too long ago, the question of being gob-smacked by a book came up and I could not recall an incident that had done that to me in a very long time. Then the Baker's Wife came along and bam, midway through the book and I was questioning what I had missed. Went back to the first chapter and there it was. I did not realize the foreshadowing until it hit me right upside the head. Usually, I am a little better than that, but this time I was caught completely off guard.

Erin Healy has a way of giving a little, letting it stew in your brain and then two or three chapters later explains the parts that you did not know. The interactions of people and their back-stories make you pay closer attention as the layers slowly peel away.

Audrey Bofinger, called by God to be a comfort to others has not always had an easy life, but when a story surfaces about her husband the Pastor of a small church and the questionable acts of their son's girlfriend, Audrey and Geoff are forced to leave the sanctity of their church and open a small bakery in town.

Early one morning while driving with her son in dense fog, Audrey hits a scooter owned by Julie Mansfield, the wife of the man that ran them out of the church and the father of her son's girlfriend, leaving nothing but the mangled ruins and blood. Where is the driver of the scooter? Julie Mansfield has a few secrets of her own and when a newly released murderer comes to town searching for forgiveness, their lives intersect with shocking force and each person will have to find forgiveness from those that they have hurt the most.

The Baker's Wife is a Christian Fiction Suspense book with a wee bit of paranormal thrown in. The paranormal part might throw some people off since it seems to appear in strange ways, but if you can get passed the woo-woo with your dose of scripture, this is a book that will hold your attention and have you flabbergasted at the same time.

The ending does not have the spark or intensity of the first two thirds of the book, but maybe that is just me and others will love it to the end. There just seemed to be something missing, as if the author ran out of ways to surprise the reader. You will not like all the characters in this book, and you are not meant to. Some take a very twisted view with their interpretations, some lie as easily as they breath and some relish in their role as victim. However, all bring something to the table and you as the reader will take something away.
