Shelley Gaskin, Series Editor for the GO! Series, is a professor of business and computer technology at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. She holds a master's degree in business education from Northern Illinois �University and a doctorate in adult and community education from Ball State University. Dr. Gaskin has 15 years of experience in the computer industry with several Fortune 500 companies and has developed and written training materials for custom systems applications in both the public and private sector. She is also the author of books on Microsoft Outlook and word processing.

Nancy Graviett is a professor in the Business and Computer Science department at St. Charles Community College in Cottleville, Missouri, where she is the program coordinator for the Business Administrative Systems program and teaches within the program. Nancy is also very active with distance learning and teaches in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. She holds a master’s degree from University of Missouri. Nancy holds Microsoft� Certified Application Specialist certification in multiple applications and provides training both on and off campus. In her free time, Nancy enjoys quilting and spending time with family and friends.

About the Author

Jacalyn Duffin is Professor in the Hannah Chair of the History of Medicine at Queen's University in Kingston, where she has taught in medicine, philosophy, history, and law for more than twenty years. She has served as President of both the American Association for the History of Medicine and the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine. The author of seven other books and many research articles, she holds a number of awards and honours for research, writing, service, and teaching. Her most recent book is an analysis of the medical aspects of canonization, Medical Miracles; Doctors, Saints, and Healing, 1588-1999, OUP 2009.

This is a more complex book than meets the eye. I thought it would be about the quite r4ecent scientific and medical investigations of the human microbiome, which increasingly looks central to human health. It is that, but this is a highly personal book that mixes health of the earth--soil--and health of a person, sort of an inside soil and outside soil, literally grounded in the authors' garden in Seattle. The book presents equal parts personal experience and hard science, which is described clearly and should be accessible to readers--both soil and human microbiomes are far, far more complex than most people appreciate.

The book starts with a description of the authors' (the authors are married, and both have extensive backgrounds in science) rebuilding poor soil in their Seattle house, to make a garden. To be brief (the book describes this very well and gardeners will like it) it quickly became fertile and growth exploded, as did unanticipated populations of birds, insects and visiting mammals, all stemming from an enriched microbiota (which includes bacteria, fungi and other folks). A healthy soil has a healthy microbiota, every bit as complex as the above ground ecosystem parts; the point is that healthy soil produces healthy food--the book is explicitly advocating changes in farming.

This connects with Bikle's cancer and experience. At first this doesn't seem relevant, but it gradually introduces the human microbiome in all its complexity, and its impact on health, and how manipulating it can have good consequences. See the connection between healthy soil and healthy body? Human ignorance of the microbial world has been hugely costly.

Recent patterns have agriculture dousing land with pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer, building up resistance in harmful bacteria and impoverishing the soil by cropping practices. And so with dousing patients with chemicals--works wonders but may alter or kill off the microbiota and in the long term do more harm than good. This book makes a very solid case, and also notes that big pharma and agribusiness will fight it, as they always have, because they have so much to lose. Think of this book as an attempt to raise consciousness. If you read it through, your views will change, and if not a convert to the lifestyle advocated, you'll at least have to credit it as having some compelling evidence behind it.

So: a healthier future will require much more awareness of microbes and taking them into account as assets in body and soil.

Our Ancient Hidden Allies

This remarkable and fascinating book really opened my eyes about the significance of a term I had heard before, but didn't fully appreciate-- microbiome. Starting from the story of why composting makes soil healthy, the authors take us to the roots of plants to learn that plants have a way of communicating with the bacteria and fungi in the soil. In this way plants attract the microbes they need to grow and stay healthy. We also learn that modern chemical fertilizers are destroying the soil microbiome so that crops are less nutritious and the soil's ability to produce crops declines.
Then we learn about the human microbiome and find that the microbes in our bodies outnumber our own cells by many times, and that our gut is an amazing system analogous to the root system in plants. Our own health is strongly affected by our microbiome, and that antibiotics must be used carefully in order not to decimate our inner allies. Indeed, our outdated view of 'germs' is leading to the rapid evolution of superbugs that can resist most antiseptics and drugs. Many chronic diseases are a consequence of poorly developed, unhealthy microbiomes.
The message of this book is that much more needs to be learned about the hidden world of nature, because even though we can't see it, our lives depend on it.

A Most Memorable Read

The Hidden Half of Nature is about microbes; and life, or more accurately about perhaps everything tangible and nothing we can see. For quite some time I didn't view the subject matter as being of great import and cosigned this title to the bottom of my "read one day" list. What a mistake. This book was, without a doubt, one of the most beautifully written, well documented, and enthralling stories I have recently read. I am not prone to hyperbole, but the brilliant blend of scientific fact with compelling personal insight is flawlessly accomplished. Rarely do I feel my scientific knowledge base has significantly expanded in harmony with what I can only describe as a flush of spirituality. My only minor caution to prospective readers is the risk of being compellingly drawn to gardening and the attendant aches that plague the novice tiller of the earth. Otherwise, this is a must read book for lovers of science, discovery and awe at the hidden universe that surrounds us and is the core of life itself.

Surprisingly the Right Book

I was so surprised to find this book for such an inexpensive price. From the original publishing company, it is impossible to find it for under $100, so when I told my professor I had found it for an extremely low price, she didn't believe I had found the right book. She thought it was the workbook or something. Lo and behold when it came it was the exact book I needed, just by a different publisher. Sure, it has a different cover, but the content and pagination are the same, so I am having no problems in class. As a poor college student, I would recommend buying this version. You get the same book for less money leaving both you and your bank account happy.

This book reviews the history and evolution of the English language from ancient times to the present. The authors do so in a methodical, scholarly manner that provides a thorough, in-depth look at how the English language (a member of the Indo-European family of languages) developed and changed over time in the context of social, religious, political and military, and economic events in English history.

At the end of each chapter is an extensive bibliography that will provide interested readers with numerous leads to additional and supplemental reading materials. The book is scholarly and academic, and not suitable for readers with only a casual interest in the history of the English language. Anyone studying the history of the English language for the first time should consider looking at more basic, introductory publications before trying this book.

Apart from readers with a scholarly interest in historical linguistics, this book could be of interest as a reference book for teachers and instructors of English as a Second Language (ESL). Although this book does not provide material that could be readily used in an ESL class, its discussion of how the English language developed and changed over time could help ESL teachers and instructors better understand some of historical reasons behind various aspects of the English language that often are difficult to explain to English language learners. About the Author
Michael Hooper is the Bureau Chief of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). He began his involvement with the criminal justice system as a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. His 23 years of LAPD experience encompassed positions as a patrol officer, field supervisor, and watch commander. This was followed by five years of service on the Criminal Justice Program faculty at Penn State University's Capitol Campus. He currently manages POST's Center for Leadership Development, which provides core leadership training for all of California's peace officers promoted to supervisory, management, and executive positions.

Lori Beth Way is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Criminal Justice program at California State University, Chico. Her research areas are primarily in the subfields of policing and courts. Dr. Way is also Project Director for a federally funded grant that works to reduce the crimes of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking in the campus community. Besides teaching at CSU, Chico, she is also an instructor at the local police academy.

Bernadette T. Muscat has worked with victims of domestic violence by serving as a legal advocate. She has worked with law enforcement agencies, victim services, and court programs for program and policy development, evaluation, research, and training to ensure effective administration of victim assistance. She has also worked with state coalitions to develop and implement victim-related polices. She has written, presented, and provided professional entry level and advanced training nationwide on topics such as domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, trauma response, elder abuse, victims with disabilities, workplace violence, underserved victim populations, and campus oriented crimes, research, and policy development.

Candice A. Skrapec is a professor in the Department of Criminology at California State University, Fresno. She is a psychologist and criminologist. For the past 20 years she has maintained her research focus on serial murder (particularly in terms of underlying biological and psychological factors) and continues her interviews of incarcerated serial murderers in different countries. Her professional works and academic research result in regular calls from the media, movie and documentary producers, as well as authors of fact and fiction books in the areas of serial murder to investigate profiling. With over 20 years of experience in the law enforcement field working with officers and agencies in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, she is also frequently consulted by police around the world to assist in the investigation of homicide cases.She has taught a wide range of criminology courses since 1988 and has trained police and correctional officers in different countries in the areas related to her academic research and professional experience.

Lester Pincu is a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Criminology at California State University, Fresno. He has worked in corrections, counseling and group psychotherapy, alcoholism, drug addiction, and treatment programs. He is a California Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor, a Certified Group Psychotherapist, and holds an appointment by the California State Legislature as a member of the California Council on Criminal Justice. He worked as a deputy probation officer for Contra Costa County investigating and supervising juvenile offenders from 1965 to 1970. He was a full-time faculty member at Fresno State from 1970 to 2001.

Ruth E. Masters is currently the Chair of the Department of Criminology at California State University, Fresno where she has been teaching since 1972. She received her Ed.D. from the University of Southern California in 1978. A former parole agent, she was the sole author and lead author of two criminology textbooks. She was selected in 1999 for the Author of the Year Award by the National Association of Forensic Counselors for her book Counseling Criminal Justice Offenders. Her special interests include corrections, addiction, criminological theory, and cross-cultural administration of justice. She has conducted criminal justice programs in Amsterdam, France, Italy, Scotland, Greece, Belgium, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Brazil, Hong Kong, The Czech Republic, Peru, China, Turkey, Ireland, New Zealand, and Thailand.

John P.J. Dussich is a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Criminology of California State University, Fresno. He is one of the world's leading authorities on victimology, victim services, criminology, victimological theory, and criminological and victimological research. He has worked as a criminal justice planner, as a police officer, as a warden of a prison, as a director of a program evaluation unit, and is now the director of an international victimology research institute in Japan. He is the editor-in-chief of the online journal International Perspectives in Victimology. He has taught criminology since 1966 and victimology since 1976. The American Society of Victimology has named the John P.J. Dussich Award in his honor, and gives it each year to a person who has made significant contributions to the field of victimology. 

Phyllis B. Gerstenfeld is Professor and Chair of Criminal Justice at California State University, Stanislaus, where she has taught since 1993. She received a Ph.D. in Psychology and a J.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her research interests include hate crimes, juvenile justice, and law and psychology. She is author of several books and book chapters, including a textbook on hate crimes, and she has co-edited a hate crimes reader as well.

Great entry level book

This is a very basic criminal justice text. It broadly covers most areas of criminal justice system, including (but not limited to) law enforcement, corrections, court systems, historical applications, current theories, and trend data.

I'd recommend this book to anyone that's unsure if they'd like to pursue a career in criminal justice, or if you're unsure which area to specialize in. If you're looking for a book that's focuses strictly on law enforcement, there are probably better texts for you.

Also, what sets this book apart from me is the structure. It's very well organized and the layout is great. Makes it very easy to take notes from and retain information.

I needed to get this item at last minute for one of my classes and I received it right on time. This made me very happy. It was inexpensive compared to renting books at my school bookstore. I am very pleased with this item! :)

Sometimes things don’t go as we plan or even as we’d like them to go! A great 2nd Chance Love Story!

GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary is one of the best, realistic, gripping, angst-filled, down to earth, and emotional second chance romances to come along in a long time. Faced with mistakes of the past, protecting her son, and their privacy, Gemma realizes the pain she’s caused Travis by not telling him about her feelings, and his son. Now she journeys a path that makes her question every aspect of Travis’ reasoning for following her to Rock Canyon and wanting to be with her and making a go of the marriage that shouldn’t have happened. Does he truly want her or just the connection to his son? Will his lifestyle as a well-known country music star destroy the simple life she leads and her son’s chances of growing up normal?

Some may see Gemma as an angry, unlikable character who snarks at Travis every chance she gets, but I saw her as a woman with whom I could connect and understand her fear, her trepidation, and suspicions because she’d been forced to stand alone against the world to protect her son. Travis wants it all, he wants the family he never had, the unconditional love that only a child can give, and the woman who has always claimed his heart and his dreams. Gemma just has a hard time believing that what she’d always wanted for her life was truly happening, and with the only man she’s every loved.

Codi Gary has created a story about a teenage mother who has carried a secret for ten years always wishing and always wondering what might have been had she’d been brave enough to reveal it when the time was right. Now when the time is at its worst, she’s forced to reveal it and bear the consequences of the pain she causes for both, Travis and her son, as well as friends and herself. I loved this story. I connected with everyone in it, I loved the friendships that exist between Gemma, Gracie, and Mike of which Travis was once part and he now hopes to rekindle. I loved the way the town rallied around the star-crossed lovers and only saw the good in what Gemma thought was the worst. I loved that Travis never gave up hope even when he thought all was lost.

I highly recommend GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary because it’s a story that could’ve happened to anyone - well, except maybe the country-rock star aspect - but for only by the grace of God, go you. If you want to fall in love with an emotional, snagged from the headlines, could’ve really happened, second chance romance, read GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary.

Gemma Carlson went to Vegas to attend a Book Convention, and not to wake up married, most especially to her ex-boyfriend who is now a famous country rock-star.

It was supposedly a weekend only kind of fun, and then when she leaves Vegas, it would just stay there, and not haunt her. But she assumed wrong, because apparently, Travis Bowers, was eager to patch things up between them. So when she ran from him, he followed her. He let her get away all those years ago, he wasn’t going to let her get away this time.

Gemma had always been his first love, and a woman he can’t forget. He might have been famous, and he has all the money in the world, but Gemma had never been far from his thoughts. The moment he saw an opportunity in Vegas, he immediately grabbed it. He invited her over a few drinks, which led to that impromptu marriage, and yes, she ran away from him the moment she was able to. When he tried to follow her, he was in for the biggest surprise in his life when he found out he has a nine-year old son.

"Ten years ago he’d been a kid, unsure of what he wanted. He was a man now. And he wasn’t giving up his wife without a damn good reason."

Suddenly, her quiet town life turns a 180, and she was once again the talk of the town.

Despite being frustrated over Gemma’s actions – the running away, and the impulsiveness: you gotta let her have it! Because she’s a great mother to Charlie, she even allowed him to know his father. All she wanted was to protect him from Travis’ lifestyle. She didn’t want any harm to come to her son – so you can’t really blame her if she kept on pushing him away or she kept this secret for a whole period of time. When she was pregnant, Travis was on the verge of stardom, and being a young pregnant girl with all those weird hormones kicking inside your system, not to mention fear and yes, her impulsiveness, she broke up with him instead of telling him she was pregnant.

Travis, on the other hand, had grew up in foster care so he knows what it is like to grow up without a family. The moment he knew of his child’s existence, he took it with arms wide open. He didn’t know the first thing of becoming a father, but he did it with flying colors. Day by day, he creeps into their lives, and embeds himself into it. In fairness to them, they try to be civil and good parents whenever Charlie is around, and talk about their issues when he wasn’t.

Despite being okay, the past is still an issue, and not to mention TRUST. It was the elephant in the room they didn’t want to address at first, until it blew up into their faces and tore apart whatever it is that they started building. Both of them can be stubborn and needed a good, painful wakeup call before they can settle their issues. It was a long, rocky journey before the reconciliation. I started hating Gemma somewhere, but the grand gestures at the end of the story - makes up for everything else.

I have always adored plots like this, it’s old, it’s reused countless of times which probably makes it harder for the author on how to make it different from the rest. But Codi Gary made sure Good Girls Don’t Date Rock Stars will be different enough to make you want to finish the book once you get started. It’s romance will make you swoon, characters that you will love and will annoy you at one point, and steamy scenes that will get you hot. But what I love most about this book is its emphasis on the importance of trust and honesty in a relationship. Without this two, a relationship could never be possible.

"Maybe that’s what makes it so hard. When you spend years thinking and dreaming about someone and have them fall back into your life? Sounds like fate to me."

The chemistry between Travis and Gemma sparks and the sex is hot.

“’You don’t even know who I am anymore,’ she said softly. ‘I’d like to remedy that, if you’re willing,’ he said, brushing his mouth over hers. “What do you say? One more chance?’”

Gemma Carlson was a shy, chubby girl who got bullied quite a bit when she was young. She learned to box up her emotions and just roll with it. Then sophomore year of high school, a new boy moved to town, Travis Bowers. Travis was “the hot musician with the killer smile and drawling voice” and she had the biggest crush on him. Turns out he also liked her. He was an aspiring musician and was signed shortly after graduation. Only problem was she was pregnant. She wanted to tell him, but would that make him give up his dreams to stay with her? She couldn’t risk it, so she kept it from him. Now ten years later they are staying in the same Vegas hotel, you can only imagine what happens next.

“He could hold out hope for second chances, but he couldn’t lose himself in her too soon”

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fairly typical romance, but it kept me hooked and wanting to know what would happen next. All romances have that bit of drama that tears the couple apart. Usually I think to myself, oh he/she’s being ridiculous. In this book, the drama is believable. The issues this couple are dealing with are realistic as are the fall out and resolution. The chemistry between Travis and Gemma sparks and the sex is hot. I give this book 4.5 stars and 3 hands down the pants. I would definitely read other books in this series.
